Sony and Marvel team: Spider-Man will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Spider-Man-Marvel

Wesley Spines’ gory fantasy action Blade was the very first major release based on Marvel’s legendary comic book franchise. From there, development of the adaptations increased dramatically with two new series (Bryan Singer’s X-Men and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man) but they couldn’t exist together as they were owned by separate studios, Fox and Sony respectively.

When the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off in 2008 with Iron Man (later developing Thor, Captain America, The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy). Sony attempted to bounce back into the fray with a new reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, with director Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) replacing Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. Its impressive box-office stats didn’t match a mixed critical reception but Sony went ahead with plans for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, 3 and 4 as well as the spin offs Sinister Six and Venom. Writers, directors and release dates were set but the first sequel’s disappointment set the franchise slowly hurtling.

The infamous email hacks from North Korea, the one over The Interview that prompted Sony head Amy Pascal to stand down, also unleashed a rumour that Sony were handing Spidey over to Kevin Feige and Marvel. The stories have come to a conclusion with this new announcement.

“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,” says Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. “Amy has been deeply involved in the realisation on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”

While we suspect Spidey will make his debut in Civil War, it’s unclear if Feige will be inheriting The Amazing Spider-Man franchise or heading toward another reboot. A different casting may well be in the pipeline. Kodi Smitt McPhee (The Road, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Craig Roberts (Submarine) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Fright Night) seem like more age appropriate candidates than the now over-30 Garfield.

We do know that it’ll be aiming for a July 2017 release. This won’t effect anything going before it (Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America 3, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2) it is causing slight delays for Thor 3, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Inhumans.

Here’s the full upcoming Marvel schedule.

News for Bourne 5, Spider-Man 3, Night at the Museum and Star Wars 7

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Ancient Fear. How does that sound to you? You may have guess that The Ancient Fear is the latest title to be rumoured for JJ Abrams’ sci-fi adventure, recently confirmed to be starring Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Max Von Sydow, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Andy Serkis. You also may have picked up that The Ancient Fear would be a complete reversal from 1977’s A New Hope. Even if this title isn’t the final one, it still hints that the villainous forces, most likely Driver and Von Sydow, will be reviving an antagonist from the past, perhaps Darth Plageuis as he’s been pulling strings since the beginning.

We’re can be pretty confident saying that The Sinister Six’s members will most likely be Green Goblin, Mysterio, Doctor Octopus, Rhino, Vulture and Kraven the Hunter but director Marc Webb has hinted at who’ll face Spidey in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. “I like the idea of Kraven,” he continues. “The Vulture. Ock. I always thought the idea of Mysterio was interesting. Maybe Scorpion. But really, Kraven I think is kind of interesting.”

Marvel fans will likely recount Kraven as a Russian big game hunter who selects Spider-Man as his new prey but it’s possible that his origin will be altered as there’s already a Russian villain in the form of Rhino. Webb’s third and final Spider-Man film will most likely star Andrew Garfield, Shailene Woodley, Paul Giamatti, Felicity Jones, Dane DeHaan and Sally Field.

We regard The Bourne Trilogy, made up of Doug Liman’s Identity and Paul Greengrass’ Supremacy and Ultimatum, to be modern action masterpieces, all of which made Tony  Gilroy’s mediocre thriller The Bourne Legacy, focussed on Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross, even more disappointing. Despite its drop in financial takings, Universal seemed determined to make a Legacy follow up with Justin Lin but all the fans want is a back to roots Bourne film with Matt Damon (The Departed, The Adjustment Bureau, True Grit, Invictus, Saving Mr Banks, Good Will Hunting) and Paul Greengrass (United 93, Green Zone, Bloody Sunday, Captain Phillips).

The Oscar winning Damon has now confirmed he’s still excited by the idea of Bourne 5. “I’ve always been open to it if Paul Greengrass is the director. We’ve just never been able to come up with a story. It felt like such a good way to end it last time,” he continued. “Having said that, I love that character. I’d love to see what happened to him.” So, if anyone has a vision for where the series should go know, get your script together and contact Universal. The studio obviously don’t want to call Legacy a failure and move on so maybe a Cross/Bourne crossover is in order.

The Night at the Museum films have never had full critical approval but the two instalments do have a huge place in the heart of fans and are a handful at the box office with each film averaging at about $500 million. It’s no wonder that Shawn Levy (Real Steal, Date Night, The Internship) wants to revive the franchise. A third instalment has been in mind for a while but, despite the odd casting, it seemed to be moving far too slow to make it in time for this its December release.

Today’s confirmation of the title has certainly proven Fox’s dedication of bringing us the sequel in time for Christmas. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb will star Ben Stiller (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Tropic Thunder, Zoolander), Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Hugo, Schindler’s List), Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers, Cars, Midnight in Paris), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Rebel Wilson (Pain and Gain, Pitch Perfect), Robin Williams (Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society), Rachael Harris (The Hangover, Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Rami Malek (Short Term 12, Need for Speed), Ricky Gervais (The Office, Muppets Most Wanted), Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins) and the final performance of the late great Mickey Rooney.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Ancient Fear? – December 18th 2015

Tuorhoth returns with the latest on Hobbit 3, Justice League, Avengers 2, Star Trek 3, Spider-Man, Jungle Book and more!

We’re sad to say that we’ve been away on a week of huge movie news, which we’re now dubbing MEGA-NEWS. We’ve got the scoop on pretty much every major movie coming our way in the next couple of years, and beyond, besides an official casting for Star Wars: Episode VII but we’re not completely in the dark with Star Trek Into Darkness’ JJ Abrams’ sequel to the world’s biggest movie franchise.

There’s a huge amount of spin offs to Star Wars in various medias. TV shows like Clone Wars and (now) Rebels, video games such as Battlefront, Knights of the Old Republic and the hugely successful Force Unleashed saga and numerous comic books and graphic novels have revived the series through some difficult times. However, some the most renowned SW side stories are from the novels such as Timothy Zahn’s work (above) and Darth Plagueis. Some of these books are light fan-fiction but most of it is genuine, George Lucas-approved canon to the main films. Despite this, we now know that the storytelling works of Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) are not to take off from the novels.

Producer and writer Simon Kinberg informs us that “For the movies, the canon is the canon, and the canon is the six films that exist. It’s all about honouring the movies and telling a new story.” We still don’t know of a single cast member or title but that’s set to change as, all going well, filming finally begins this May. Star Wars: Episode VII – December 18th 2015

The life of technological visionary Steve Jobs has once, unsuccessfully, been told on screen with Ashton Kutcher in the lead role. Sony’s alternative to this has been in their minds for a long time and it seemed quite promising when it appeared that David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Seven, The Social Network) was to direct with Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, American Hustle, The Prestige) starring.

It’s now apparent that Sony are negotiating with Danny Boyle for the directing job. Boyle, the British writer and director behind Trainspotting, 127 Hours, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Trance, Shallow Grave and Slumdog Millionaire as well as the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, is the second highly esteemed director Sony have approached after Fincher but the most exciting reveal of all of this is that Boyle may be reuniting with his star of The Beach, and five time Oscar nominee, Leonardo Di Caprio (The Wolf of Wall Street, Titanic, Inception, Django Unchained, The Departed) for the film.

Ray Fisher has only one on-screen acting role so far, 2008 short film The Good The Bad and The Confused, and yet he’s swiftly becoming one of the most talked about young stars in Hollywood. He came into competition for the male lead in Star Wars, which he may be unlikely to get, but has just landed the biggest role in his career: he’s been cast as DC comics hero Cyborg in Zack Snyder’s (300, Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead) Man of Steel sequel Batman vs Superman. Despite that unconfirmed title, it seems as if this’ll much more of a Justice League themed adventure than we’d thought at the 2013 Comic-Con announcement. Fisher joins Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Gal Gadot, Tao Okamoto and Laurence Fishburne in the cast. Batman vs Superman – May 6th 2016

Disney and Warner Bros are in a highly heated race to get a new remake of The Jungle Book to are screens. The latter found a great choice of director in Ron Howard (Rush, Apollo 13) before his replacement set up Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings/King Kong star and The Hobbit’s second unit director) for the job. Meanwhile Disney is far ahead; Elf and Iron Man’s Jon Favreau is nailed in to direct and we know that Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, The Wire, Luther, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) will voice Shere-Kahn but another two stars are part of a new rumour. 12 Years a Slave’s Oscar winning supporting star Lupita Nyong’o is up for the role of Rackcha, Mowgli’s adoptive wolf-mother, while Scarlett Johansson (four time Golden Globe nominee of The Avengers and Lost in Translation fame) could be putting an interesting spin on Kaa, the hypnotising and villainous snake whose charms put the heroes in peril. The Jungle Book – October 9th 2015

Celebrating their 300th issue and their 25th anniversary, Empire Magazine are giving some incredible coverage of upcoming films including Marvel’s sci-fi sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Joss Whedon, writer of The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Serenity and Toy Story, had this to say about the various villains in the film. “I fiercely dislike the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that. But last time I had all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict.”

The chief villain is obviously the robotic Ultron and he may be Whedon’s highlight “I’m having a blast with Ultron,” Whedon said. “He’s not a creature of logic – he’s a robot who’s genuinely disturbed. We’re finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.” Star Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man) recently shared the very first on-set pic from the film (above) that also stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson, Cobie Smulders, James Spader, Thomas Kretschmann, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jeremy Renner, Hayley Atwell, Don Cheadle and Paul Bettany. The Avengers: Age of Ultron – May 1st 2015

Taking off from indie sci-fi hit Safety Not Guaranteed, writer/director Colin Trevorrow, who’s hinted at further instalments, takes on a huge role with the lead gig on dinosaur action reboot Jurassic World which has finally revealed some pics from their island photography. These sneak peeks offer a more futuristic style than we’d initially expected. The Jurassic Park sequel stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Nick Robinson, Omar Sy, Katie McGrath, BD Wong Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Judy Greer and Vincent D’Onofrio. Jurassic World – June 12th 2015.

Sadly, Star Trek and Fringe writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are going their seperate ways in order to focus on the bigger directing projects that have attracted them both. Kurtzman is the current candidate to direct Spider-Man spin-off Venom but Orci has expressed his desire to become the director of Star Trek 3.

Several directors, including Rupert Wyatt and Joe Cornish, had previously been rumoured after JJ Abrams opted out in favour of Star Wars. Should he get the job, it’d be the Mexican’s directorial debut while Kurtzman does have a shot-calling credit on indie drama People Like Us. Star Trek 3 – 2016

The Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman is the man behind the new Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible, Minority Report, Top Gun) sci-fi action Edge of Tomorrow. It sees a soldier forced to constantly relive a battle again and again until its success and unveiled a new poster today. With the impressive supporting cast of Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau, Looper), Bill Paxton (Aliens, Agents of SHIELD) and Lara Pulver (Da Vinci’s Demons, Sherlock), it could surprise us but it’s set to be another throwaway Cruise flick that treads too closely to other films (in Oblivion’s case Moon and in this case Source Code). Edge of Tomorrow – May 30th.

There have already been some intriguing castings for Joe Wright’s (Hanna, Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) reboot of Disney animation Peter Pan. Unknown star Levi Miller will play a younger version of the titular role while Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Inside Llewyn Davis, Death Sentence) plays Pan’s adversary Hook, who currently serves under the flag of Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman – X-Men, Les Miserables, The Prestige). Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, Side Effects) will play American-Indian chief’s daughter Tiger Lily. Now an additional Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia, Les Miserables), Kathy Burke (Nil By Mouth, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Nonso Anozie (Ender’s Game, The Grey) have officially joined the ensemble. Pan – July 17th 2015.

We were as thrilled as any when it was revealed that the five remaining members of Monty Python, the legendary British comedy sextet behind Life of Brian, The Flying Circus, The Meaning of Life and The Holy Grail, would be bravely running away onto the O2 stage for their final reunion but were as equally disappointed when the tickets sold out in an incredible 43 seconds. However, there may be a new way for the millions of fans missing out to enjoy the return of Mesrs Cleese, Jones, Gilliam, Idle and Palin. It’s been announced that 1500 screens (including 450 in the UK) across the globe will be presenting the show’s closing night as part of a worldwide live cinema event. Monty Python Live – June 20th.

One of the Spider-Man franchises biggest icons is one who is neither a superhero nor supervillain but Peter Parker’s chain-smoking, media-dictating Daily Bugle boss John Jonah Jameson Junior, portrayed excellently by JK Simmons in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy. However, he’s yet to appear in Marc Webb’s recent reiteration The Amazing Spider-Man. Webb, flanked by Amazing Spider-Man 2’s stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan, spoke out about the possibility of JJJ’s return for future films at a Google+ fan Q&A.

“I like the idea very much of him coming up in the next film. It was more easy to accept a new Spider-Man than someone who could outdo J.K. Simmons in that role. He is so iconic. That’s something we’ve really talked about. Obviously I love that character because he poses such an interesting dilemma for Spider-Man. The answer is I don’t know, but I think you can expect to see him in the future.” The Amazing Spider-Man 3 – June 10th 2016. The Amazing Spider-Man 4 – 2018.

The final part of Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy trilogy, and Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit is approaching fast but a report from TheOneRing hinted at a potential title change from There and Back Again to Into the Fire. Neither sounded quite as previous subtitles such as An Unexpected Journey or The Desolation of Smaug. It then took us by surprise to hear that the title as officially change to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The Oscar winning writer/director Jackson himself stepped out to say this.

“Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the “Desolation of Smaug”.

“When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.”

Without trying to give too much away for the Tolkien-illiterate, The Battle of the Five Armies is a defining moment in Middle-Earth history and so I think it get’s a well deserved place on the titles. It’s been hinted that There and Back Again hasn’t been completely ditched and will appear on the various boxsets for the films so The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will be the three films that make up our The Hobbit: There and Back Again trilogy.

Battle of the Five Armies will star Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Lee Pace, Manu Bennett, Ian Holm, Sylvester McCoy, Aidan Turner, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt, Billy Connolly, Graham McTavish, Hugo Weaving and Christopher Lee. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – December 12th

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 review

Director: Marc Webb

Starring: Andrew Garfield, Dane DeHaan, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Colm Feore, Sally Field, Campbell Scott, BJ Novak, Felicity Jones, Denis Leary, Paul Giamatti, Chris Cooper

It’s fair to say that 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man so that Sony could keep the rights to the character. Although it wasn’t terrible, it was genuinely below the quality we expected, seemed wildly unnecessary and under-grossed Sam Raimi’s superior trilogy. It was still successful enough to confirm numerous sequels however and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes with the promise that they’d learned from their previous errors.

In New York, Peter Parker (Garfield) is living a double life: one as the crime fighting vigilante Spider-Man and the other as a graduating student. Both lives are haunted by the death of Captain Stacy (Leary) and are turned upside down by the arrival of angered young billionaire Harry Osborn (DeHaan), who’s set to take over his sick father’s (Cooper) genetics empire. Meanwhile, lonely Oscorp, the Osborn’s company, employee Max Dillon (Foxx) suffers a severe accident at work, giving him the power to manipulate electricty. All of these events cause a rift in his relationship with the Captain’s daughter Gwen (Stone) and his Aunt May (Field), who may just hold the answer to his parent’s disappearance.

It’s a shame to say that this sequel doesn’t seem to have learnt from its predecessor. Its attempted to be much lighter but that’s ended up with some poor dialogue, particularly Spidey’s sluggish quips. We don’t exactly get a balance of this and the more horrifying sequences. There’s a constant lack of terror without and becomes hard to take the ludicrous action seriously. The reinvented Green Goblin and Electro were well designed but lacked the terror of Evil Dead’s horror maestro Sam Raimi’s trilogy and its villains.

We can accept the bonkers action in The Avengers and its likes because we better understand the bridge between the heroes and their alter-egos. In this, Spider-Man is a completely different person to Parker and I don’t think there’s one transformation scene. The deactivation of Spidey’s web shooters ends up with an uninteresting physical comedy sequence and some remarkably poor exposition.

There are few technical issues too. There’s an attempt to introduce a new heroic main theme that doesn’t quite mix with Electro’s numbing dubstep, despite boasting The Dark Knight’s Hans Zimmer. The CG in Spider-Man’s breathtaking swinging endeavourers is of great quality but the numerous slo-mo scenes, rather than increasing both detail and awe, take the life out of the action.

There are numerous highlights amongst the messy plot however. Emma Stone is greatly entertaining as Gwen as she continues to bemuse Peter. With their excellent and believable dynamic, he and the charismatic Garfield form the most convincing couple there’s been in a superhero movie but the 25 year old Stone and 30 year old Garfield still aren’t convincing as newly graduated students, and that is a huge issue with the film’s credibility.

Jamie Foxx meanwhile fantastically judges his performance as (not literally) invisible tech nerd and Spider-Man fanatic Max. His horrific accident is well handled and Electro is initially frightening in the Times Square set piece but after that he lost his sense of presence in the film.

Without trying to give much away, the film’s other villain is Dane DeHaan’s Osborn who’s desperate for the cure for his fatal disease and that desperation leads to a horrifying step into villainy. While DeHaan is both engaging and believable, he seems to have been typecast in the same neglected angst-filled role he did in Chronicle. With all of these villains, the film struggles to find a defining closing action sequence and in the end settles for three, dragging out the thin, scattershot plot even further.

Annoyingly, the film’s two most esteemed actors, Paul Giamatti and Chris Cooper, are reduced to cameo-like small roles. Giamatti plays Russian mobster Aleksei, a character with a tonne of cheap lines in the cartoonish opening sequence and likely less than three minutes’ screen time. Cooper meanwhile seems as if he’d appeared in multiple deleted scenes; his sinister motives are never fully explained and the mystery of his and Richard Parker’s work has been given a dissatisfying end to focus on Sony’s developing superhero world.

That could be a step in right direction however. Spider-Man’s read a page of Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s book; it certainly knows how to get the Marvel super-fans incredibly excited and so to reel them in for future instalments. Sadly a little too much of these in-movie teasers are in the actual trailers but that’s no reason to not let the endless hidden references, chiefly the brewings of The Gentleman and The Sinister Six, get you in the mood for more Marvel.

Everyone has a part of themselves they hide, even from the people they love most. And you don’t have forever, none of us ever do.”

Sinister Six appoints Drew Goddard, Wreck-It Ralph 2 levels up plus new TMNT posters

Wreck-It Ralph was easily Dinsey’s most charming (non-musical and non-Pixar) animated film in years, and defeated the likes of Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 to win the Tuorhoth Award for Best Animated Film as well as gaining nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Comedy. On top of that, the film, which tells the story of an arcade villain determined to make something better of himself in the gaming world, got an Academy Award nomination, which is lost to Brave, and took nearly $500 million worldwide. You won’t be surprised to hear that we’re immensely excited about today’s news. X-Men: First Class and Captain Phillips composer Henry Jackman let slip that he’d been approached for a sequel.

“I can’t tell you more, not because I’m being coy, but I believe that it is officially on the cards,” he told collider, “I don’t know any more other than a story is indeed being written. I’d be very surprised not to. I’m not blowing my own trumpet. Forget about the music. Just the movie itself I thought was a fantastically imaginative and creative piece of work.” We hope that the follow up will be directed by Rich Moore and will star John C Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Alan Tudyk, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch and Joe Lo Trugilo.

With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 coming very soon, Sony are advancing the continuation of their slice of the Marvel universe. As well as another two Spider-Man sequels, there’ll be a pair of spin offs. Venom will be brought to us by People Like Us director and Star Trek and Fringe writer Alex Kurtzman as well as Roberto Orci and Ed Solomon and that’s followed by The Sinister Six, which we knew was going to be written by Cloverfield, World War Z and The Cabin in the Woods’ (below) Drew Goddard. However, Goddard is now talking with Sony about directing the film.

We’re still not quite sure which iteration of The Sinister Six will be depicted as there have been numerous incarnations and members. There’s a possibility that established Spidey evil-doers such as Lizard (Rhys Ifans), Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) will be included but we’d put our money on the classic line up of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman, Doctor Octopus and Vulture. Electro has already found a solid casting and Doc Oc and Vulture have been teased in various trailers but Goddard will have a serious task trying to cast five new villains.

There’s little else to report today besides the revealing of four neat Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles teaser posters. The reboot is brought to us by South African director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans, Battle Los Angeles) and producer Michael Bay (Transformers, Pain and Gain) and stars Megan Fox, William Fichtner, Johnny Knoxville, Tony Shalhoub, Will Arnett, Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Pete Ploszek, Danny Woodburn and Whoopi Goldberg.

Star Wars 7 sights Lupita Nyong’o, Sienna Miller targets American Sniper and Marc Webb leaves Amazing Spider-Man 4

There’s a stellar list of actors who’ve discussed or been rumoured for roles in JJ Abrams’ (Star Trek: Into Darkness, Lost, Super 8) Star Wars: Episode VII. There’s been Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Gary Oldman, Sullivan Stapleton, Jack O’Connell, Saoirse Ronan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matt Smith, Hugo Weaving, Michael Fassbender, Adam Driver, Jack Reynor, Jesse Plemons, Jason Flemyng, Michael B Jordan and most recently John Boyega, Ed Speelers, Ray Fisher and Matthew James Thomas. However, the only character who’s actually been cast is R2D2.

Continuing the theme of 12 Years a Slave stars (see Fassbender, Cumberbatch and Ejiofor – can we soon expect Paul Giamatti, Paul Dano and Brad Pitt?), the Oscar winning Lupita Nyong’o has been named in connection with the female lead in the film, the same role (presumably) Ronan was rumoured for, while Jesse Plemons and John Boyega are the favourites for the male lead and Adam Driver as the villain. Still, none of the cast have been confirmed but, the closer we get to the shooting, more stars will officially join the cast.

Legendary director Steven Spielberg (ET, Saving Private Ryan, AI, Schindler’s List, Empire of the Sun, The Colour Purple, War Horse, Lincoln, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws, Munich, Amistad, War of the Worlds, The Terminal, Catch Me if You Can, Raiders of the Lost Ark) was set to begin pre-production on thriller American Sniper alongside star Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook, The Hangover, Limitless) but then Spielberg opted out of the project. The whole development seemed to slow until another legend, this time Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino, Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, Invictus, Mystic River, Letters From Iwo Jima, Changeling, The Bridges of Madison County, A Perfect World), in fact a five time Oscar winner, joined the production.

There’s been a major development in American Sniper with the word that Sienna Miller will be portraying the film’s female lead alongside Cooper. Miller is likely better known for Stardust, Factory Girl and GI Joe and picked up high praise plus BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for her lead role in TV movie The Girl. The Wrap’s report states that Miller was selected over other considered stars such as Evangeline Lilly (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug), Kate Mara (127 Hours) and Jaimie Alexander (Thor: The Dark World) for the role and has entered negotiations. At least we know that, should this proposed deal fall through, there are some fine acting talents for plan b.

You may have picked up on our report that Marc Webb was to direct The Amazing Spider-Man 3. However, the man behind 500 Days of Summer will not call the shots on the fourth instalment, although he states that he’d like to become a “consultant” on the sequel. For the idea of a heir, the most popular suggestion is Drew Goddard, director of The Cabin in the Woods and the upcoming spinoff Venom.

Star Wars: Episode VII – December 18th 2015

American Sniper – 2016

Marc Webb will direct Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga confirm Conjuring 2

The sequel to the blockbuster reboot The Amazing Spider-Man arrives in about two months time and it’ll further set up Sony’s ongoing superhero universe with Venom, The Sinister Six and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4. The latter two projects seem to be making less progress than the others but today the first two film’s director Marc Webb was confirmed for the third. This instalment will probably star Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Martin Sheen, Shailene Woodley and Sally Field while the villainous tales of Venom and The Sinister Six will be brought to us with a writing/directing amalgamation of Drew Goddard, Alex Kurtzman, Ed Solomon and Roberto Orci. We’ve also been informed that Sony’s attempts to build an Avengers like universe will bring us one Spider-Man film every year so there’s plenty of webswinging action to come.

James Wan’s The Conjuring was the horror smash hit of 2013 taking $318 million from a remarkably small budget while winning the hearts. Its stars, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, have been added to the sequel’s cast confirming the follow ups production. So far, plot details are pretty much non-exitstent but we know that their characters, Lorraine and Ed Warren, will be caught up in a new terrifying poltergeist case. As well as this, there’s a planned spin-off/prequel titled The Annabelle Story which sees the titular creepy doll causing terror of a trio of flatmates. The Conjuring’s cinematographer John R Leonetti will direct that one but I doubt James Wan will return in any way for either of these projects as he’s busy on Fast and Furious 7 (arriving April 10th 2015).

The Super-Bowl 2014 Trailers special: Transformers 4, Noah and more!

We’re not venturing into sports just yet but the American Football extravaganza known as Superbowl is a huge event for advertising. With well over 100 million Americans watching, companies have to pay the whopping sum of $8 million dollars just for a one minute advertising slot. Only the biggest of big budget, big star blockbusters can afford to make the cut so you may be quite surprised when I tell you that among the nine titanic efforts trailered last night is the new project from Darren Aronofsky!

But before we get to that, we have the matter of a movie I recently predicted to make over a billion dollars. I speak of the fourquel of a monster series – Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Director Michael Bay (Armaggedon, Pearl Harbour, Bad Boys) returns to the series after a quick, and unsuccessful, break to make Pain and Gain. The franchise hopes to continue it success with an new human cast with Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor, replacing the old guard of Shia LaBeaouf, Rosie Huntington-Whitley and Megan Fox. This time, the Autobots are at battle with the villainous Dinobots and the technology tycoon Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammer), the former is revealed in the very first trailer. The film also stars Stanley Tucci and Peter Cullen. July 10th.

The second instalment in this nine-part epic is Marvel’s very own Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We’ve seen footage from this before but Superbowl unveiled the second trailer, which offers more in depth look at new antagonist The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). The plot pitches Captain America (Chris Evans) still adjusting to life in the 21st Century as well as working with SHIELD Agents such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Crossbones (Frank Grillo) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to bring down a new menace who’s terrorising Washington. Cap 2 also stars Emily VanCamp, Samuel L Jackson, Robert Redford, Cobie Smulders, Dominic Cooper, Hayley Attwell and Toby Jones and is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. March 28th.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is next. Marc Webb returns to direct the sequel which increases the stakes for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) who has to balance life between his superhero alter ego Spider-Man, who’s battling Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and the sinister father/son double act of Oscorp (Dane DeHaan as Harry and Chris Cooper as Norman), and normal life with the grieving Gwen (Emma Stone) and lonely Aunt May (Sally Field). The new trailer can be found here. To be honest, I’m not that impressed. April 18th.

Following on from their “Across the Internet” campaign, Muppets Most Wanted has launched a new ad in which the new doppelganging villain Clementine literally reaches out to us Across the Internet. Tina Fey, Ty Burrell, Stanley Tucci, Ricky Gervais, Lady Gaga, Tom Hiddleston, Salma Hayek, Christoph Waltz and Danny Trejo make up the human cast alongside the classic Muppets such as Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Sam the Eagle, Beaker, Dr Honeydrew, Walter and Animal. Flight of the Conchords/The Muppets’ James Bobin directs. March 28th.

With a premise of no CG, just expensive cars going ridiculously fast, video game adaptation Need for Speed is actually in good shape. It sees newly released ex-con Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul – Breaking Bad’s Jesse Pinkman) getting back into the dragraces that got him locked up for a year. Upon hearing the news, Marshall’s ex racing partner Dino (Dominic Cooper – Marvel’s Howard Stark) puts a bounty on his head. Scott Waugh (Act of Valour) directs a huge cast including Michael Keeton, Dakota Johnson, Scott Mescudi and Imogen Poots. The superbowl spot can be found hereMarch 12th.

We return to the aforementioned Darren Aronofsky who, after impressing with the likes of Black Swan, The Wrestler, Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, makes his comeback with a huge budget and cast list for his new epic picture Noah. The new trailer is available but I’m shocked that a director as prestigious as Aronofsky would fall to the depths of a Twitter hashtag; this time it’s “#TheFloodIsComing”!. The film stars Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone, Kevin Durand, Douglas Booth, Nick Nolte and Frank Langella. April 4th.

Pompeii seems to me like one of the potential box office clunkers of the year with a decent cast list which doesn’t match its huge budget but director Paul WS Anderson (Event Horizon, Resident Evil) may prove me wrong. The new trailer unveils a fair bit of spectacle so the film won’t rely on the cast of Kit Harrington, Carrie Anne Moss, Emily Browning, Jessica Lucas, Kiefer Sutherland, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jared Harris and Jessica Lucas alone. May 2nd.

3 Days to Kill launched a new trailer too. McG (This Means War, Terminator: Salvation, We Are Marshall, Charlie’s Angles) directs this new action thriller starring Kevin Costner as an dying agent who teams up with his daughter for one last assignment which get him the life saving drug he needs. Also starring Amber Heard, Connie Nielson and Hailee Steinfeld. February 21st.

Lastly, we have another Kevin Costner project. Draft Day sees the manger of American Football’s Cleveland Browns who’s struggling to find the number one draft pick for his team. Costner will star alongside Terry Crews, Jennifer Garner and Ellen Burstyn while director Ivan Reitman (Ghost Busters, No Strings Attached). April 11th

Gravity has won the most awards with an impressive six wins but it’s 12 Years a Slave’s day as it picked up Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. American Hustle gained four wins while Frozen, The Great Gatsby, Blue is the Warmest Colour and Lone Survivor got two. I’m not going to do in depth analysis but I’m stilled surprised Her is being praised as an “original” and “fresh” premise as it has exactly the same plot as a Big Bang Theory episode where a lonely Raj (Kunal Nayyar) falls in love with his I-Phone’s Siri. I’m probably not the first to say it but I haven’t heard anyone else pick up on it.

The only other major piece of news is the stunning new poster for Marvel and Sony’s superhero sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Marc Webb directs and Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Paul Giamatti, Sally Field, Dane DeHaan and Chris Cooper star but today’s focus is the hopefully terrifying new villain Electro, played by Ray, Collateral and Django Unchained’s Jamie Foxx.

New pics from X-Men: DOFP, Exodus, Captain America 2, Gone Girl, Dawn of Planet of Apes and Spider-Man 2 plus Gal Gadot on Wonder Woman

We’re still unsure if Gal Gadot will play a major role in the yet untitled superhero showdown of Batman vs. Superman. The Israelian star of Fast and Furious has already been confirmed to be playing Wonder Woman but we’re not sure of how much screen time she’ll get with Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Joaquin Phoenix (Lex Luthor?) and Jason Momoa (Hawkman?) already beefing up the cast. After initial controversy over the casting due to Gadot not having Wonder Woman’s exaggerated size and posture, she said this: “I represent the Wonder Woman of the new world,” she told the Israeli press, “If I really go ‘by the book’, it’d be problematic.”

Finally, we’ve got a huge compilation behind the scenes pics and fresh new stills courtesy of Empire’s new 2014 preview extravaganza. Gone Girl. Directed by David Fincher (The Social Network, Fight Club, Se7en, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and adapted from the Gillian Flynn novel, the crime thriller has built an impressive cast including Ben Affleck, Neil Patrick Harris and Rosamund Pike.

We move swiftly on to Jamie Foxx as the new Spider-Man villain Electro in Marc Webb’s Marvel sci-fi superhero sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Andrew Garfield, Paul Giamatti, Emma Stone, Sally Field and Dane DeHaan.

Another Marvel project but on Disney’s side of things now. It’s Joe and Anthony Russo’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the second character to be referenced in the title, played by Sebastian Stan, is today’s focus. Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Robert Redford, Samuel L Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Emily Van Camp, Dominic Cooper, Toby Jones, Hayley Attwell and Frank Grillo also star.

Legendary British director Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator, Prometheus, Kingdom of Heaven, American Gangsters, Black Hawk Down) puts his spin on the Bible with epic Exodus. Starring Christian Bale, Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver, Indira Varma, Joel Edgerton, John Turturro and Ben Kingsley. The film seems to be going for huge practical sets as oppose the the more modern, generic use of CG, perhaps in homage to Ben-Hur and Cleopatra.

Andy Serkis leads the way for the cast of dark fantasy sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as he strides round a picturesque lake in his trademark mo-cap suit, donned by Serkis previously in The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, King Kong and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. Cloverfield’s Matt Reeves directs additional cast members such as Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Judy Greer.

We finish with a behind the scenes peaks at X-Men: Days of Future Past, with director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects) hanging out with the 70s mutants, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Fassbender and Hugh Jackman, on a 70s car in front of a suspiciously modern greenscreen.
