A couple of months ago we released our top picks for the first half of the year but, with the summer season finishing, we’ll give an overview of the year’s films from a commercial and critical perspective.

Sam L Jackson, John C Reilly and more in talks for Kong: Skull Island

With the director Jordan Vogt Roberts (The Kings of Summer) and star Tom Hiddleston (Avengers Assemble, Crimson Peak), fantasy reboot Kong: Skull Island seemed set for a smooth preproduction before the supporting stars JK Simmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man) and Michael Keaton (Birdman, Batman) both quit. Since then some progress has been made with the casting of Brie Larson (Short Term 12, 21 Jump Street) and Corey Hawkins (Non-Stop, Straight Out of Compton) and a rumoured role for Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind) putting the film back on track but three new major stars have entered negotiations.

Cult hero Samuel L Jackson (Jurassic Park, Pulp Fiction, The Incredibles, Django Unchained, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Kingsman: The Secret Service) is in talks alongside fellow acting greats and Oscar nominees John C Reilly (Boogie Nights, Chicago, The Aviator, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Wreck-It Ralph, Guardians of the Galaxy) and Tom Wilkinson (Shakespeare in Love, Batman Begins, Michael Clayton, Belle, Selma, The Grand Budapest Hotel). This presumably means that Crowe’s involvement in the project is no more.

Guardians 2 title revealed and Comic Con lineup announced

Marvel’s third phase has titled its new properties fairly simply – Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Inhumans – while their sequels have received subtitles – Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok and The Avengers: Infinity War. The new Spider-Man’s title is yet to have been revealed but the latest news from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is that the sequel has been titled: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.

Gunn directs the cast of Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Star Lord, Bradley Cooper (Limitless) as Rocket, Zoe Saldana (Avatar) as Gamora, Vin Diesel (Pitch Black) as Groot, Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) as Thanos, Karen Gillan (Oculus) as Nebula, Dave Bautista (Riddick) as Drax, Seth Green (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Howard the Duck and Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) as The Collector

Kong: Skull Island loses JK Simmons and Michael Keaton and PT Anderson in line for Pinocchio

At last year’s Comic-Con, Legendary Pictures (the studio behind The Dark Knight, Inception, Pacific Rim, Godzilla, Interstellar and Jurassic World) annunced a highly anticipated new project titled Kong: Skull Island. Jordan Vogt Roberts (The Kings of Summer) was hired to direct and Avengers Assemble/War Horse star Tom Hiddleston signed on with class coming from Oscar winner JK SImmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man) and nominee Michael Keaton (Birdman, Beetlejuice). Disappointingly both Simmons and Keaton have ditched the project. It doesn’t appear in either case to be a casualty of scheduling difficulties so now a lack of confidence hangs over the project. It’s also so far unclear if this project is related to Peter Jackson’s 2005 hit King Kong reboot in which case Andy Serkis (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Naomi Watts (The Impossible) and Adrien Brody (The Pianist) might reprise their roles.

Various filmmakers have been connected to a new version of Pinocchio including Ben Stiller (Tropic Thunder, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish) and Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim) as well as the writers Michael Mitnick (The Giver), Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) and Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service). The latest writer/director in line is Paul Thomas Anderson, the six time Oscar nominee Paul Thomas Anderson (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, There Will be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice). The Mad Max franchise returns with original director George Miller in a madcap new adventure starring Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Charlize Theron (Prometheus, Monster), Zoe Kravitz (Divergent, After Earth) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men, Warm Bodies). The film is penned by a $150 million budget so it’ll have to take a vast amount of money to regain its money. The latest poster is below.

There’s also new shots from Terminator Genisys, the new action packed sequel to the James Cameron masterpieces The Terminator and Judgement Day. The Terminator series is an extremely uneven one so we’re still not sure if the new instalment is going to be a success (like Cameron’s original and Judgement Day) or a flop (like the sequels Rise of the Machines and Salvation). Genisys has just debuted a new poster for your viewing pleasure. Alan Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) directs the cast of Arnold Schwarzenegger (True Lies, Predator), Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones, Dom Hemingway), Jai Courtney (Divergent, A Good Day to Die Hard), Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Lawless), Matt Smith (Doctor Who, Lost River) and Oscar winner JK Simmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man).

With various big names already attached to his fantasy adventure The BFG, famed director Steven Spielberg (Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Lincoln) has enlisted even more cast members for the project. Rebecca Hall, the Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated star of Iron Man 3, The Town, The Prestige and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, was the first major addition in an announcement that included Jemaine Clement (What We Do in the Shadows, Flight at the Conchords) and Penelope Wilton (Shaun of the Dead, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel). The cast already includes Mark Rylance (Wolf Hall, Bridge of Spies), Bill Hader (Superbad, The Skeleton Twins) and Martin Freeman (Fargo, Sherlock, The Hobbit trilogy).

It’s so far unclear if the new film Creed will be an Oscar favourite or a limp reboot of the lagging Rocky franchise (one that began with a Best Picture win in 1976 steadily declined through four sequels in the 1980s and returned with the minor hit of 2006’s Rocky Balboa). The new addition of the franchise has Michael B Jordan (Chronicle, The Fantastic Four) reteaming with his Fruitvale Station (an acclaimed urban drama) director Ryan Coogler to play Creed’s grandson who recruits Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone – First Blood) as his new mentor to become a new boxing legend. The film’s first still has been revealed. Graham McTavish (The Hobbit, Outlander) and Tessa Thompson (Selma, Dear White People).
