Battle of the trailers: Dawn of Justice vs The Force Awakens

A few years ago, DC were beating Marvel off with the brilliance of their Dark Knight trilogy but their now lagging far behind the development of Marvel’s cinematic universe. The franchise’s newest chapter, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, is now beginning its advertising campaign with the very first trailer but it already has a new rival.

Said rival is Disney’s sci-fi adventure sequel Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens which has simultaneously launched its own teaser.

In terms of which trailer is the most effective, we’d have to go in the favour of Star Wars. While Dawn of Justice looks undeniably stylish and thrilling, DC have already made the film redundant with the announcement of Justice League – we already know that the Bat and the Man of Steel be on the same side in the near future. The Force Awakens meanwhile has still left everything a mystery.

Dawn of Justice is directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) and stars Henry Cavill (Stardust, Immortals), Ben Affleck (Argo, Gone Girl), Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious), Amy Adams (American Hustle, The Master), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Zombieland), Jeremy Irons (The Lion King, Reversal of Fortune), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Mystic River), Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones), Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine), Scoot McNairy (Monsters, 12 Years a Slave), Diane Lane (Unfaithful, Hollywoodland) and Holly Hunter (Broadcast News, The Piano, The Incredibles).

The Force Awakens is directed by JJ Abrams (Super 8, Star Trek Into Darkness) and stars Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), John Boyega (Attack the Block), Daisy Ridley (Toast of London), Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones), Adam Driver (Tracks), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Max Von Sydow (Minority Report) and Andy Serkis (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) with the returning cast of Mark Hamill (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Carrie Fisher (When Harry Met Sally) and Harrison Ford (Blade Runner).

Furious 7’s James Wan may direct DC’s Aquaman

James Wan is a filmmaker best known for his work on horror with hits such as The Conjuring, Insidious and Saw but is making his most box-office grounds on Fast & Furious 7, which just grossed $800 million in 12 days and is already set to smash the billion mark. This being Wan’s first full on action flick, studios are now very interested in snapping him up for their own franchises – which is exactly what Warner Bros just did.

It’s reported that Wan is now in early talks to be helming DC’s reboot of the amphibious adventurer Aquaman, who’ll make his screen debut as Game of Thrones’ Jason Momoa in next year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film comes in a long line of DC Universe related spin offs including Michelle MacLaren’s (Breaking Bad) Wonder Woman, David Ayer’s (Fury) Suicide Squad, Zack Snyder’s (300) Justice League and the so far officially unassigned Green Lantern, Cyborg, Shazam and Flash films.

Aquaman – July 28th 2018

Eisenberg’s Luthor revealed, Russos set for Infinity War, new Child 44 posters and Idris Elba in talks for Star Trek 3

We were worried that The Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg’s performance as the supervillain Lex Luthor (yet another billionaire tech entrepreneur) would be a case of the typecasting that halted Dane DeHaan in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and why great performances such as Heath Ledger’s or Tom Hardy’s come out of the blue and excel. This first look at him in the role is something to get us hopeful however.

Batman V Superman is directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Man of Steel) and stars Ben Affleck (Argo, Gone Girl), Henry Cavill (The Man From UNCLE), Amy Adams (American Hustle, Big Eyes), Gal Gadot (Fast and Furious), Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Hannibal), Scoot McNairy (Monsters), Holly Hunter (The Piano, The Incredibles), Diane Lane (Hollywoodland, The Perfect Storm) and Jeremy Irons (The Lion King, Reversal of Fortune).

As Avengers Assemble and Age of Ultron’s Joss Whedon ruled himself out from Infinity War. Now the two parted concluder to Phase 3 will be helmed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the sibling team who behind the Captain America instalments The Winter Soldier and Civil War. We still don’t know ant of the characters that’ll be surviving until the third and fourth Avengers films but we can expect the likes of Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher), Chris Hemsworth (Rush), Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game).

Eric Bana and Benedict Cumberbatch will be a tough act to follow but the newest Star Trek instalment is looking to cast Idris Elba. The star of Prometheus, Pacific Rim and Luther is in talks for the lead villain role for director Justin Lin (Fast Five). The cast includes Chris Pine (Jack Ryan, Into the Woods), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar), Zachary Quinto (Heroes, Margin Call), Karl Urban (Dredd, The Lord of the Rings), Anton Yelchin (Fright NIght, Like Crazy), John Cho (American Beauty, Harold and Kumar) and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Mission: Impossible).

Finally today we’ve got our hands on the brand new posters for the thriller Child 44. The film depicts a detective in Soviet Russia who investigates a series of grim child murders. Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) directs the amazing ensemble of Tom Hardy (Inception, Locke), Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Public Enemies), Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum, Pride), Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, RoboCop), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Trance), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, The Imitation Game) and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

Jared Leto and Margot Robbie set for lead villains in new DC films

DC’s new film slate, building on the foundations of Man of Steel and 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, will feature the likes of Vin Diesel as Shazam, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg in their own spin offs while Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams will star as Batman, Superman and Lois Lane in recurring roles through Justice League parts 1 and 2 (both directed by Zack “300” Snyder).

Standing out form their ten planned films is Suicide Squad as it depicts a team of villains. David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch) directs this flick and casting rumours circulated around the likes of Will Smith (I am Legend, Men in Black, The Pursuit of Happyness), Ryan Gosling (The Notebook, Drive, The Place Beyond the Pines) and Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Locke) but more recent reports point towards specific roles.

Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, About Time) is going to Harley Quinn. This particularly is a point of interest as the character hasn’t been played a single time on screen (despite there being seven Batman films). Quinn will be accompanied by a new iteration of The Joker, DC’s most iconic villain. Here he’s likely to get played by Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Panic Room, Requiem For a Dream), succeeding the likes of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger who in fact won an Oscar for the role. Robbie’s casting is an intelligent one but Leto may struggle between Ledger’s portrayal of a tortured soul or the more extravagant Nicholson/Mark Hamill versions. Leto did play borderline insane back in Panic Room but then he was more obviously channelling Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys.

McGregor, Gyllenhaal and MacConaughey in Doctor Strange rumour and DC announce new releases

The elusive casting of Marvel’s Doctor Strange still rages. Scott Derickson (Sinister) was hired shortly after the film’s confirmation but the crucial position of the lead role in the superhero fantasy has passed through many hands. So far Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Panic Room), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road) have been named in connection until this summer when Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line, Her) began negotiations. Months later, Phoenix dropped out and the chase began once more.

Names such as Adrien Brody (The Pianist) and Jon Hamm (Mad Men) have been thrown up in speculation. Hardy and Cumberbatch seem unlikely but Leto is still a viable option. More recently there were rumours of Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) and Ethan Hawke (Before Sunset) being involved but a new report claims a host of actors are on a shortlist. Matthew MacConaughey (Interstellar, Mud, Dallas Buyers Club), Oscar Isaac (The Two Faces of January, Inside Llewyn Davis, Star Wars: Episode VII) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Source Code, Brokeback Mountain).

Most interestingly Ewan McGregor was also named. The Scot found fame in a Danny Boyle double bill of Shallow Grave and Trainspotting but seems to have been shying away from blockbuster roles since the subduing experience of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. He’s since taken roles in The Impossible, Black Hawk Down, Moulin Rouge and Tim Burton’s truly loveable Big Fish. McGregor would be an excellent choice.

Warner Bros are following Marvel’s suit with a cinematic universe based upon the DC comic books. Following last year’s Man of Steel, the layout of their new set of films is at last being unveiled. As expected, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice rolls in March 25th 2016. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) gets a spin off in 2017 accompanied by Dwayne Johnson’s Shazam and the very first Justice League picture. Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wall-Flower, We Need to Talk About Kevin) plays The Flash and Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) is Aquaman, both arriving in 2018. David Ayer (Fury, End of Watch) also helms The Suicide Squad, now confirmed as part of the line up. Ben Affleck’s The Batman and more Henry Cavill antics in Man of Steel will follow.

Paul Greengrass targets Di Caprio thriller, new look at Snyder’s Batmobile and Morgan Freeman joins Ted 2

Paul Greengrass is one of this century’s most esteemed British directors. He was behind the best of the Bourne series (Supremacy and Ultimatum), gained a Oscar best director nomination for United 93 and his latest, the astonishing Captain Phillips, won our Tuorhoth Best Film award. He’s now lining up a new project in the form of a thriller set in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The film sees a security guard discovering a terrorist plot for which prevents and then blamed for. The Wolf of Wall Street’s Oscar nominated duo Leonardo Di Caprio (Django Unchained, Catch Me If You Can, The Departed, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Titanic, Shutter Island, Blood Diamond, Inception) and Jonah Hill (Moneyball, 21 Jump Street, Superbad, The Lego Movie, Knocked Up, This is the End) picked up the project a little while back and have named Greengrass atop their list of candidates for directing.

Finally today, director Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300, Man of Steel) has published another look at the new Batmobile, which’ll debut in 2016’s DC crossover Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. This still offers much more of a combat ready version of the iconic vehicle, rather than the sleeker version previously teased. It’s certainly distinguished from Tim Burton’s upgraded F1 car or Christopher Nolan’s more realistic Tumbler although it’s awfully reminiscent of the version introduced next year’s action gaming sequel Batman: Arkham Knight. Dawn of Justice will star Ben Affleck (Argo, Gone Girl), Henry Cavill (Immortals, The Tudors), Gal Gadot (Fast and Furious, Knight and Day), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Zombieland, Now You See Me), Amy Adams (American Hustle, Her), Jason Momoa (Conan the Barbarian, Game of Thrones), Jeremy Irons (The Lion King, Gosford Park), Holly Hunter (Raising Arizona, The Incredibles), Scoot McNairy (12 Years a Slave, Monsters), Diane Lane (Chaplin, Unfaithful) and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Apocalypse Now).
