New Star Trek 3 title rumours

The JJ Abrams reboot of the Star Trek franchise in 2009 and the 2013 follow up Into Darkness are two of the most acclaimed films in the series but Abrams had to sit out on the third due to the arrival of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Justin Lin (Fast Five) has replaced him as director while Simon Pegg writes. The latest rumour states that the film’s title is Star Trek Beyond and will see the team go into deep unexplored space.

The cast includes Chris Pine (Jack Ryan, Into the Woods), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar), Zachary Quinto (Heroes, Margin Call), Karl Urban (Dredd, The Lord of the Rings), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Mission: Impossible), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Monster: Dark Continent), Anton Yelchin (Like Crazy, Fright Night), John Cho (Harold and Kumar, American Beauty) and Idris Elba (Prometheus, Thor, Pacific Rim.

Eisenberg’s Luthor revealed, Russos set for Infinity War, new Child 44 posters and Idris Elba in talks for Star Trek 3

We were worried that The Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg’s performance as the supervillain Lex Luthor (yet another billionaire tech entrepreneur) would be a case of the typecasting that halted Dane DeHaan in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and why great performances such as Heath Ledger’s or Tom Hardy’s come out of the blue and excel. This first look at him in the role is something to get us hopeful however.

Batman V Superman is directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Man of Steel) and stars Ben Affleck (Argo, Gone Girl), Henry Cavill (The Man From UNCLE), Amy Adams (American Hustle, Big Eyes), Gal Gadot (Fast and Furious), Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Hannibal), Scoot McNairy (Monsters), Holly Hunter (The Piano, The Incredibles), Diane Lane (Hollywoodland, The Perfect Storm) and Jeremy Irons (The Lion King, Reversal of Fortune).

As Avengers Assemble and Age of Ultron’s Joss Whedon ruled himself out from Infinity War. Now the two parted concluder to Phase 3 will be helmed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the sibling team who behind the Captain America instalments The Winter Soldier and Civil War. We still don’t know ant of the characters that’ll be surviving until the third and fourth Avengers films but we can expect the likes of Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher), Chris Hemsworth (Rush), Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game).

Eric Bana and Benedict Cumberbatch will be a tough act to follow but the newest Star Trek instalment is looking to cast Idris Elba. The star of Prometheus, Pacific Rim and Luther is in talks for the lead villain role for director Justin Lin (Fast Five). The cast includes Chris Pine (Jack Ryan, Into the Woods), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar), Zachary Quinto (Heroes, Margin Call), Karl Urban (Dredd, The Lord of the Rings), Anton Yelchin (Fright NIght, Like Crazy), John Cho (American Beauty, Harold and Kumar) and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Mission: Impossible).

Finally today we’ve got our hands on the brand new posters for the thriller Child 44. The film depicts a detective in Soviet Russia who investigates a series of grim child murders. Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) directs the amazing ensemble of Tom Hardy (Inception, Locke), Noomi Rapace (Prometheus, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Public Enemies), Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum, Pride), Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, RoboCop), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, Trance), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, The Imitation Game) and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

Sam Rockwell in Poltergeist images, Cranston and Paul rumoured for new roles and new Daredevil trailer

“Theeere heeeere!”

Firstly today we have the very first look at the new remake of horror classic Poltergeist, courtesy of producer Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead) and British director Gil Kenan (City of Ember). It’ll depict a family moving into a new home, occupied by evil spirits and will star Sam Rockwell (Moon, Seven Psychopaths, Iron Man 2, The Assassination of Jesse James), Rosemarie DeWitt (The Company Men, Kill the Messenger, Mad Men) and Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Mad Men, Lincoln, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

In 2014, Breaking Bad duo Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul went almost head to head with Godzilla and Need for Speed respectively getting released, the former Japanese beast being the obvious winner. They may be butting heads again as they are both connected with two different roles. Cranston (star of the Best Picture winning Argo) is rumoured for Star Trek 3.

The sequel (after both JJ Abrams and Roberto Orci quit) is on its third director with Justin Lin (Fast and Furious series) now set at the helm and will star Chris Pine (Into the Woods, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), Zachary Quinto (Heroes), Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy), Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings, Dredd), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Mission: Impossible 3), Anton Yelchin (Like Crazy, Fright Night) and John Cho (American Beauty).

Aaron Paul, last seen in biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, may be in the running for the male lead in the first Star Wars spin off. Paul was involved in Star Wars before, playing Luke in Kevin Smith’s New Hope live script read. The subject of the film hasn’t been established but it’ll be directed by Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards and the female lead is in contention between Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, Like Crazy), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Rooney Mara (The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Her).

Finally today we have the first full trailer for Netflix and Marvel’s very first collaboration: Daredevil. This teaser is both surprisingly brilliant and brutal. Showrunner Steven S DeKnight (Spartacus) commands the cast of Charlie Cox (The Theory of Everything, Stardust), Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Trance), Elden Henson (The Hunger Game: Mockingjay), Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel, Munich) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men in Black, The Judge).

Wyatt, Tyldum, Lin and Duncan Jones in consideration for Star Trek 3 and Mr Turner leads London Critics

Departing to the new Star Wars trilogy, JJ Abrams’ sterling work on the Star Trek reboot series was always going to be hard to replace but the removal of esteemed writer Roberto Orci from the bridge proved the extremity of the task. Next Generation star and writer Jonathan Frakes has been lobbying for the job but those mentioned here are the most likely to succeed Abrams for Paramount’s so far untitled production.

On the shortlist are Rupert Wyatt, Daniel Espinosa, Justin Lin, Morten Tyldum and Duncan Jones. These five can easily be categorised into two camps: Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Gambler) and Jones (Source Code, Moon) are representing the sci-fi credentials while Lin (Fast and Furious 5/6) and Daniel Espinosa (Child 44, Safe House) are the action veterans in consideration. Morten Tyldum is an interesting contender. The Norwegian’s roots are with thrillers such as the greatly lauded Headhunters but is gaining acclaim for wartime drama and multi-Golden Globe nominee The Imitation Game.

In terms of who’s likely to get the job, the BAFTA winning Duncan Jones has already ruled himself out. Wyatt is sworn off the traditional blockbuster format and Lin is preoccupied with the next Bourne instalment. Tyldum appears to be embarking on a path to future Oscar glory and perhaps not the Final Frontier and I’m not sure Espinosa’s nuts-and-bolts style suits Star Trek’s uber stylish mould. The cast is yet to have been confirmed but we can expect to see Chris Pine (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Into the Woods), Karl Urban (Dredd, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Out of the Furnace, Avatar), Zachary Quinto (Margin Call, Heroes), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Mission: Impossible), Anton Yelchin (Fright Night, Like Crazy) and John Cho (Sleepy Hollow, American Beauty).

Roberto Orci departs Star Trek 3 and rumours about new Nolan movie

JJ Abrams (Super 8) left a great gap when he parted ways with Star Trek after two brilliant films and traded it for Star Wars. His replacement as director for the third film was the writer Roberto Orci while the production was set for a release in 2016. Deadline have now reported that Orci is no longer attached but the reason is yet to have give an official reason. It still isn’t clear if he’s quit of his own accord or if Paramount gave him the boot. Either way it’s surprising, particularly as The Amazing Spider-Man franchise fell apart with his departure.

The search for his replacement has thrown up the far fetched suggestion of Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim VS The World, Hot Fuzz) while there’s a strong campaign for The Next Generation star/director Jonathan Frakes (Riker). Star Trek 3 will likely star Chris Pine (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, People Like Us), Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avatar), Zachary Quinto (Margin Call, American Horror Story), Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Dredd), Anton Yelchin (Like Crazy, Fright Night), John Cho (American Beauty, Sleepy Hollow), Alice Eve (Men in Black 3) and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Paul).

Christopher Nolan For Ready Player One? Get the Latest image

Christopher Nolan, director of Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, new epic picture Interstellar got a fairly polarized reaction; some acclaimed it a masterpiece but it has gained its fair share of loathers. Warner Bros are now seeking him for sci-fi project Ready Player One, based upon Ernest Cline’s novel.

Part of that Interstellar’s success was based around the fact that Nolan succeeded in shrouding it in mystery completely until its announcement in early 2013. Even then we knew nothing and the film’s true motives were a secret before its release. Nolan may well be reluctant to take up a project whose exact details are already published. Should he sign on, I’d expect a 2017 release but I still suspect that he has his own 2016 project up his sleeve.

Roberto Orci talks themes of Star Trek 3, Del Toro confirms Pacific Rim 2 and Age of Ultron cast confirmed for Comic-Con

Over the years, the San Diego Comic-Con has cemented its place as the biggest movie related event of the summer, roping in stars to promote the most hyped film and television of the next year. This year we’re hoping for exclusives on The Hobbit’s final chapter, a title for Captain America 3 and of coarse the latest on the sequel to the third highest grossing film of all time (and 16th greatest according to Empire) The Avengers. Its star Mark Ruffalo, who’ll likely play a larger role this time round, has now confirmed that the Age of Ultron cast will grace the convention with their presence, becoming the first guests to be announced to be attending Hall H this summer.

“Yeah, we’re gonna go out there,” the star of The Kids Are All Right and Zodiac explains, “We’re all flying, we’re flying from London. We’re working. We’re shooting. We’re gonna stop and get on a plane and go to Comic-Con together. It’s gonna be amazing.” We’re hoping for more Comic-Con announcements to come soon but there’s nothing the organisers will surely leave some of the lineups a mystery for the fans attending. Age of Ultron will star Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Evans, James Spader, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Samuel L Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Thomas Kretschmann, Hayley Attwell, Don Cheadle, Josh Brolin and Paul Bettany and is directed by Joss Whedon (Firefly, Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dr Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog, Much Ado About Nothing, Toy Story).

Even with JJ Abrams “gone leavin”, the fan pressure to make a third instalment to the widely successful rebooted Star Trek series is immense and so Into Darkness writer Roberto Orci is taking up the directing chair this time around and he’s taken some time out to fill us in on how Kirk and Co.’s story will evolve. “In they set out finally where the original series started,” says Orci. “The first two films – especially the 2009 film – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series,” continues the director. “They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen.

“They have set off on their five-year mission, so their adventure is going to be in deep space.” What many Trek fans are after is a story more focused on The Original Series’ theme of discovery, exploration, at least attempting negotiations and moving on but that kind of episodic narrative doesn’t work well with a two hour blockbuster. So long as the Klingon race play a major role (how about a Next Generation cameo or William Shatner finally turning up) and the rebooted cast of Chris Pine (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), Zachary Quinto (Margin Call), Zoe Saldana (Avatar), John Cho (American Beauty), Anton Yelchin (Terminator Salvation), Alice Eve (Men In Black 3), Leonard Nimoy (The Wrath of Khan), Karl Urban (Dredd) and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol).

Guillermo Del Toro’s epic sci-fi action Pacific Rim became a cult hit with many fans and while it doubled its budget with its international takings and gained an overall of $410 million but wasn’t quite the smash Warners were hoping for. That plus the worry of writer Travis Beacham departing set back a potential sequel by some way but today Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Devil’s Backbone, Blade II, Hellboy), who’s now working with The Avengers’ Zak Penn, at last confirmed the follow up and its set in for April 2017. The delay may confuse some but Del Toro is still at work on horror flick Crimson Peak. We hope that Rim 2 will star Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman and Ron Perlman.

Star Trek 3 confirms the new director and Fantastic Beasts sets its release date

When author of the phenomenal Harry Potter book series JK Rowling announced her intentions to scribe a new fantasy adventure set in Harry’s world – based on the thin mock encyclopaedia Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them -, we had very little clue as to its connection to Harry’s story as well as if would be coming any time soon, with no talk of potential directors. The spin-off didn’t seem like it was going to come in the foreseeable future until now. The film has set its release date as the not too distant November 18th 2016. The plot, as we know it, is of daredevil wizard Newt Scamander travelling the globe in order to compile his textbook of Fantastic Beasts seventy years before Harry picks it up at Hogwarts.

With Into Darkness and Super 8’s JJ Abrams busy on some little known space opera called Star Wars: Episode VII, the job for the director of the third Star Trek of Abrams’ recent reboot has been open. Brits such as Rupert Wyatt and Joe Cornish have been rumoured gig but it’s confirmed that Roberto Orci (writer of Star Trek, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Fringe and Sleepy Hollow) will make the sci-fi sequel his directorial debut. Star Trek 3 will likely star Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Tuorhoth returns with the latest on Hobbit 3, Justice League, Avengers 2, Star Trek 3, Spider-Man, Jungle Book and more!

We’re sad to say that we’ve been away on a week of huge movie news, which we’re now dubbing MEGA-NEWS. We’ve got the scoop on pretty much every major movie coming our way in the next couple of years, and beyond, besides an official casting for Star Wars: Episode VII but we’re not completely in the dark with Star Trek Into Darkness’ JJ Abrams’ sequel to the world’s biggest movie franchise.

There’s a huge amount of spin offs to Star Wars in various medias. TV shows like Clone Wars and (now) Rebels, video games such as Battlefront, Knights of the Old Republic and the hugely successful Force Unleashed saga and numerous comic books and graphic novels have revived the series through some difficult times. However, some the most renowned SW side stories are from the novels such as Timothy Zahn’s work (above) and Darth Plagueis. Some of these books are light fan-fiction but most of it is genuine, George Lucas-approved canon to the main films. Despite this, we now know that the storytelling works of Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) are not to take off from the novels.

Producer and writer Simon Kinberg informs us that “For the movies, the canon is the canon, and the canon is the six films that exist. It’s all about honouring the movies and telling a new story.” We still don’t know of a single cast member or title but that’s set to change as, all going well, filming finally begins this May. Star Wars: Episode VII – December 18th 2015

The life of technological visionary Steve Jobs has once, unsuccessfully, been told on screen with Ashton Kutcher in the lead role. Sony’s alternative to this has been in their minds for a long time and it seemed quite promising when it appeared that David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Seven, The Social Network) was to direct with Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, American Hustle, The Prestige) starring.

It’s now apparent that Sony are negotiating with Danny Boyle for the directing job. Boyle, the British writer and director behind Trainspotting, 127 Hours, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Trance, Shallow Grave and Slumdog Millionaire as well as the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, is the second highly esteemed director Sony have approached after Fincher but the most exciting reveal of all of this is that Boyle may be reuniting with his star of The Beach, and five time Oscar nominee, Leonardo Di Caprio (The Wolf of Wall Street, Titanic, Inception, Django Unchained, The Departed) for the film.

Ray Fisher has only one on-screen acting role so far, 2008 short film The Good The Bad and The Confused, and yet he’s swiftly becoming one of the most talked about young stars in Hollywood. He came into competition for the male lead in Star Wars, which he may be unlikely to get, but has just landed the biggest role in his career: he’s been cast as DC comics hero Cyborg in Zack Snyder’s (300, Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead) Man of Steel sequel Batman vs Superman. Despite that unconfirmed title, it seems as if this’ll much more of a Justice League themed adventure than we’d thought at the 2013 Comic-Con announcement. Fisher joins Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Gal Gadot, Tao Okamoto and Laurence Fishburne in the cast. Batman vs Superman – May 6th 2016

Disney and Warner Bros are in a highly heated race to get a new remake of The Jungle Book to are screens. The latter found a great choice of director in Ron Howard (Rush, Apollo 13) before his replacement set up Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings/King Kong star and The Hobbit’s second unit director) for the job. Meanwhile Disney is far ahead; Elf and Iron Man’s Jon Favreau is nailed in to direct and we know that Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, The Wire, Luther, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) will voice Shere-Kahn but another two stars are part of a new rumour. 12 Years a Slave’s Oscar winning supporting star Lupita Nyong’o is up for the role of Rackcha, Mowgli’s adoptive wolf-mother, while Scarlett Johansson (four time Golden Globe nominee of The Avengers and Lost in Translation fame) could be putting an interesting spin on Kaa, the hypnotising and villainous snake whose charms put the heroes in peril. The Jungle Book – October 9th 2015

Celebrating their 300th issue and their 25th anniversary, Empire Magazine are giving some incredible coverage of upcoming films including Marvel’s sci-fi sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Joss Whedon, writer of The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Serenity and Toy Story, had this to say about the various villains in the film. “I fiercely dislike the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that. But last time I had all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict.”

Embedded image permalink

The chief villain is obviously the robotic Ultron and he may be Whedon’s highlight “I’m having a blast with Ultron,” Whedon said. “He’s not a creature of logic – he’s a robot who’s genuinely disturbed. We’re finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.” Star Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man) recently shared the very first on-set pic from the film (above) that also stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson, Cobie Smulders, James Spader, Thomas Kretschmann, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jeremy Renner, Hayley Atwell, Don Cheadle and Paul Bettany. The Avengers: Age of Ultron – May 1st 2015

Taking off from indie sci-fi hit Safety Not Guaranteed, writer/director Colin Trevorrow, who’s hinted at further instalments, takes on a huge role with the lead gig on dinosaur action reboot Jurassic World which has finally revealed some pics from their island photography. These sneak peeks offer a more futuristic style than we’d initially expected. The Jurassic Park sequel stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Nick Robinson, Omar Sy, Katie McGrath, BD Wong Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Judy Greer and Vincent D’Onofrio. Jurassic World – June 12th 2015.

Sadly, Star Trek and Fringe writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are going their seperate ways in order to focus on the bigger directing projects that have attracted them both. Kurtzman is the current candidate to direct Spider-Man spin-off Venom but Orci has expressed his desire to become the director of Star Trek 3.

Several directors, including Rupert Wyatt and Joe Cornish, had previously been rumoured after JJ Abrams opted out in favour of Star Wars. Should he get the job, it’d be the Mexican’s directorial debut while Kurtzman does have a shot-calling credit on indie drama People Like Us. Star Trek 3 – 2016

The Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman is the man behind the new Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible, Minority Report, Top Gun) sci-fi action Edge of Tomorrow. It sees a soldier forced to constantly relive a battle again and again until its success and unveiled a new poster today. With the impressive supporting cast of Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau, Looper), Bill Paxton (Aliens, Agents of SHIELD) and Lara Pulver (Da Vinci’s Demons, Sherlock), it could surprise us but it’s set to be another throwaway Cruise flick that treads too closely to other films (in Oblivion’s case Moon and in this case Source Code). Edge of Tomorrow – May 30th.

There have already been some intriguing castings for Joe Wright’s (Hanna, Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) reboot of Disney animation Peter Pan. Unknown star Levi Miller will play a younger version of the titular role while Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Inside Llewyn Davis, Death Sentence) plays Pan’s adversary Hook, who currently serves under the flag of Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman – X-Men, Les Miserables, The Prestige). Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, Side Effects) will play American-Indian chief’s daughter Tiger Lily. Now an additional Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia, Les Miserables), Kathy Burke (Nil By Mouth, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Nonso Anozie (Ender’s Game, The Grey) have officially joined the ensemble. Pan – July 17th 2015.

We were as thrilled as any when it was revealed that the five remaining members of Monty Python, the legendary British comedy sextet behind Life of Brian, The Flying Circus, The Meaning of Life and The Holy Grail, would be bravely running away onto the O2 stage for their final reunion but were as equally disappointed when the tickets sold out in an incredible 43 seconds. However, there may be a new way for the millions of fans missing out to enjoy the return of Mesrs Cleese, Jones, Gilliam, Idle and Palin. It’s been announced that 1500 screens (including 450 in the UK) across the globe will be presenting the show’s closing night as part of a worldwide live cinema event. Monty Python Live – June 20th.

One of the Spider-Man franchises biggest icons is one who is neither a superhero nor supervillain but Peter Parker’s chain-smoking, media-dictating Daily Bugle boss John Jonah Jameson Junior, portrayed excellently by JK Simmons in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy. However, he’s yet to appear in Marc Webb’s recent reiteration The Amazing Spider-Man. Webb, flanked by Amazing Spider-Man 2’s stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan, spoke out about the possibility of JJJ’s return for future films at a Google+ fan Q&A.

“I like the idea very much of him coming up in the next film. It was more easy to accept a new Spider-Man than someone who could outdo J.K. Simmons in that role. He is so iconic. That’s something we’ve really talked about. Obviously I love that character because he poses such an interesting dilemma for Spider-Man. The answer is I don’t know, but I think you can expect to see him in the future.” The Amazing Spider-Man 3 – June 10th 2016. The Amazing Spider-Man 4 – 2018.

The final part of Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy trilogy, and Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit is approaching fast but a report from TheOneRing hinted at a potential title change from There and Back Again to Into the Fire. Neither sounded quite as previous subtitles such as An Unexpected Journey or The Desolation of Smaug. It then took us by surprise to hear that the title as officially change to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The Oscar winning writer/director Jackson himself stepped out to say this.

“Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the “Desolation of Smaug”.

“When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.”

Without trying to give too much away for the Tolkien-illiterate, The Battle of the Five Armies is a defining moment in Middle-Earth history and so I think it get’s a well deserved place on the titles. It’s been hinted that There and Back Again hasn’t been completely ditched and will appear on the various boxsets for the films so The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will be the three films that make up our The Hobbit: There and Back Again trilogy.

Battle of the Five Armies will star Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Lee Pace, Manu Bennett, Ian Holm, Sylvester McCoy, Aidan Turner, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt, Billy Connolly, Graham McTavish, Hugo Weaving and Christopher Lee. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – December 12th

Star Trek 3 beams up new writers and Disney sign deal for Indiana Jones

I’m still unsure who exactly will be calling the shots on Star Trek 3. The Into Darkness sequel will only have previous director JJ Abrams involvement in producing so the role of director is up for grabs. The current leaders for the job are Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Rupert Wyatt and Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish but some new writers have been beamed up to the Enterprise. Patrick McKay and John D. Payne are debut writers who’ll join the man of the moment Roberto Orci, who wrote no less than Fringe, Star Trek: Into Darkness and Sleepy Hollow.

Meanwhile, The Mouse House, aka Disney Studios, have negotiated a huge deal with Paramount. After bringing in Star Wars into their walls, they’ve snapped up Lucasfilm’s other major accomplishment: Indian Jones. Steven Spielberg’s brilliant series really took a disappointing turn in 2008 with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull but Disney are confident that they, obviously with the help of Spielberg and Harrison Ford, will bring the genre defining Indy back to his adventurous roots, as oppose the the sci-fi elements introduced five years ago.

Finding Dory, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Independence Day 2 and Star Trek 3 have had to pull out to 2016Batman vs. Superman (17th July), The Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1st), Star Wars: Episode VII (December 18th), Ant-Man (July 31st), Chappie (March 27th), Jurassic World (June 12th), Warcraft (December 18th), The Good Dinosaur (November 15th), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (November 20th), Cinderella (March 13th) and, potentially, Terminator (July 1st), Legend of Conan and Bond 24 (October 23rd). The Hobbit, Angry Birds, Avatar and The Amazing Spiderman will be glad that their just skimming over, or under, it.

Fox have shuffled their 2015 releases quite a bit too. In a domino effect, Matthew Vaughn’s Colin Firth and Samuel L Jackson starring thriller The Secret Service has gone into the place previously held by Josh Trank’s The Fantastic Four, March 6th. The latter now will be going head to head with Pixar’s Inside Out on June 19th. That used to belong to the Michael Fassbender starring video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed has rolled into August 7th seeing as it’s yet to find a director. Fox also moved comedy Susan Cooper, directed by Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham and Rose Byrne, to May 22nd, putting it up against Brad Bird/George Clooney sci-fi adventure Tomorrowland.

So many mobile apps have been huge successes; Jetpack Joyride, The Impossible Game and Fruit Ninja are the stuff of legend. Angry Birds is scheduled for a 2016 release and, besides that, it’s hard to think of a film or franchise inspired by the Appstore antics of a mobile game. Warner Bros, however, reckon that they can make the box office goods with an adaptation of Temple Run.

The game sees your everyday adventurer nicking an idol from an Incan temple and he must escape along a precarious pathway from three vengeful demon monkeys. The sequel, cleverly entitled Temple Run 2, evolved into something more oriental with rivers and mines being introduced. It also spawned the film themed spin-offs Temple Run: Brave (you play as Princess Merida in a more dark foresty mood) and Temple Run: Oz (a tie in of the fantasy prequel Oz: The Great and Powerful). If the you think the production sounds like a novelty one, take in mind that David Heyman, producer of Harry Potter, Gravity and I am Legend, is linked to this one.

Finally, a full trailer for the new Angelina Jolie epic Maleficent is online. The film’s plot boils down to a very different retelling of Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. In this reincarnation, the tale is more centred around it’s truly menacing villain. Maleficent concocts an evil plan to trap the young Aurora (Elle Fanning). This is Robert Stromberg’s directorial debut but he worked on the visual effects of Life of Pi, The Hunger Games, Pan’s Labyrinth and Pirates of Caribbean. It also stars Sharlto Copley, Peter Capaldi, Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Mirand Richardson, Lesley Manville and Sam Riley. Here’s the new poster:
