Sam Rockwell in Poltergeist images, Cranston and Paul rumoured for new roles and new Daredevil trailer

“Theeere heeeere!”

Firstly today we have the very first look at the new remake of horror classic Poltergeist, courtesy of producer Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, Evil Dead) and British director Gil Kenan (City of Ember). It’ll depict a family moving into a new home, occupied by evil spirits and will star Sam Rockwell (Moon, Seven Psychopaths, Iron Man 2, The Assassination of Jesse James), Rosemarie DeWitt (The Company Men, Kill the Messenger, Mad Men) and Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Mad Men, Lincoln, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

In 2014, Breaking Bad duo Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul went almost head to head with Godzilla and Need for Speed respectively getting released, the former Japanese beast being the obvious winner. They may be butting heads again as they are both connected with two different roles. Cranston (star of the Best Picture winning Argo) is rumoured for Star Trek 3.

The sequel (after both JJ Abrams and Roberto Orci quit) is on its third director with Justin Lin (Fast and Furious series) now set at the helm and will star Chris Pine (Into the Woods, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), Zachary Quinto (Heroes), Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy), Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings, Dredd), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Mission: Impossible 3), Anton Yelchin (Like Crazy, Fright Night) and John Cho (American Beauty).

Aaron Paul, last seen in biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, may be in the running for the male lead in the first Star Wars spin off. Paul was involved in Star Wars before, playing Luke in Kevin Smith’s New Hope live script read. The subject of the film hasn’t been established but it’ll be directed by Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards and the female lead is in contention between Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, Like Crazy), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Rooney Mara (The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Her).

Finally today we have the first full trailer for Netflix and Marvel’s very first collaboration: Daredevil. This teaser is both surprisingly brilliant and brutal. Showrunner Steven S DeKnight (Spartacus) commands the cast of Charlie Cox (The Theory of Everything, Stardust), Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Trance), Elden Henson (The Hunger Game: Mockingjay), Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), Ayelet Zurer (Man of Steel, Munich) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men in Black, The Judge).

Emma Watson joins Beauty and the Beast and David Tennant joins Marvel

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has provided some brilliant franchises on film (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man) but it’s expanding with a set of new Netflix shows. Daredevil will star Charlie Cox, Rosario Dawson and Vincent D’Onofrio; Luke Cage will star Mike Colter. The other announced series, AKA Jessica Jones, stars Breaking Bad’s Krysten Ritter as its titular hero but just cast its lead villain. David Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) will play The Purple Man/Zebadiah Kilgore.

Disney have had mixed success rebooting their classic animated materials as live action franchises. From Mia Wasikowska in Alice in Wonderland to Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman, Angelina Jolie as Maleficent or even the cast of Into the Woods. British actress Emma Watson (Harry Potter, Noah, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) will be the Belle of the new Beauty and the Beast film, directed by Twilight/Kinsey’s Bill Condon.

Marvel confirm their future in massive announcement: Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Inhumans, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War!

In the summer, Marvel confirmed a series of release dates without a name to them but, at a recent presentation, the Phase 3 line up was at last revealed. It begins in 2015 with Ant-Man although that wasn’t mentioned today. What did steal focus was the third solo outing for Captain America which is now officially titled Civil War. It’ll be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (The Winter Soldier) and will star Chris Evans (Snowpiercer) as Cap’ and Robert Downey Jr (Chaplin, Sherlock Holmes) as Iron Man while there are rumoured appearances from Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation, The Other Boleyn Girl) as Black Widow and Anthony Mackie (The Adjustment Bureau, The Hurt Locker) as Falcon. There’s new title artwork for the film.
Captain America: Civil War – May 6th 2016

Cap

Next up was Doctor Strange. Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) recently signed on to star with Scott Derickson (Sinister) directing but the harrowing casting process has pushed the film’s release back a few months.
Doctor Strange – November 4th 2016

Doctor Strange

The smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy has now taken over $750 million worldwide and its sequel will be released sooner than expected. Director James Gunn (Slither) returns with the cast of Chris Pratt (The Lego Movie, Moneyball) as Star Lord, Bradley Cooper (Limitless, Silver Linings Playbook) as Rocket, Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek) as Gamora, Vin Diesel (Saving Private Ryan, Pitch Black, Fast and Furious) as Groot, Dave Bautista (Riddick, Bond 24) as Drax, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Oculus) as Nebula and Josh Brolin (No Country For Old Men) as Thanos (probably).
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5th 2017

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Thor’s second adventure, The Dark World, wasn’t consider the box office success of Cap’ 2 or the Iron Man films but it still grossed far north of $600 million globally. This has prompted the confirmation of Thor: Ragnarok, in which Asgard trembles at the threat of apocalypse. Chris Hemsworth (Rush, The Cabin in the Woods) and Tom Hiddleston (War Horse, Only Lovers Left Alive) will star as Thor and Loki respectively while I’d expect Natalie Portman (Black Swan, Leon) as Jane Foster, Idris Elba (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Pacific Rim) as Heimdall and Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs, The Remains of the Day) as Odin. A director is yet to be found.
Thor: Ragnarok – July 28th 2017

Thor

Black Panther was the first of three new properties to be announced. Again no director is signed on but a writer is present in the form of documentary maker Mark Bailey. More excitingly 42 and Get on Up’s Chadwick Boseman was confirmed to be playing the tribal hero. We reckon Andy Serkis (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Prestige, The Lord of the Rings) will play villain Ulysses Klaw.
Black Panther – November 3rd 2017

The title itself is going to be tricky to sell but Marvel have at last invested in a female led film, following suit from DC’s Wonder Woman. There’s still no word on a director or star (is Longmire’s Katee Sackhoff still on the cards?) but a release date is in place.
Captain Marvel – July 6th 2018

Captain Marvel

New franchise Inhumans was also conceived is similar circumstances in that we know almost nothing but there are faint rumours that Vin Diesel (already voicing Groot) will play team leader Black Bolt.
Inhumans – November 2018

Inhumans

The most exciting announcement of all was that the third instalment of the central Avengers series will be split into two parts. Infinity War Part 1 and 2 will be released across 2018 and 2019. I sincerely hope that Serenity’s Joss Whedon will direct.
The Avengers: Infinity War Part I – May 4th 2018

The Third Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been unleashed so tell us which of the ten new instalments you are most excited about. For us, it has got to be both parts of Infinity War. Bye for now!

First look at Charlie Cox in Marvel’s Daredevil and new posters for Hobbit 3

An additional two posters have now been revealed for Peter “Lord of the Rings” Jackson’s final Middle-Earth adventure, The Battle of the Five Armies. This time, Elf warrior Tauriel and Dwarf prince Thorin take centre stage. The film stars Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Lee Pace, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett and Ian McKellen.

Finally today, we’ve at last got our hands on the first official stills from Marvel’s Netfilx-based adaptation of Daredevil. The cast includes Charlie Cox (Stardust, Broadwalk Empire) as blinded hero Matthew Murdock, Rosario Dawson (Trance, Sin City) as secretive nurse Claire Temple, Elden Henson (Cast Away) as lawyer Foggy Nelson and Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, The Judge) as crime Kingpin Wilson Fisk.

Damon in new rumour for Bourne 5, first trailer Downey Jr’s Judge, Dawson joins Daredevil and director confirmed for Star Wars 8

It’s been well established that the Bourne franchise, a series that began with a trio of action masterclasses (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum) from Doug Liman and then Paul Greengrass with star Matt Damon (Saving Private Ryan, Green Zone, Good Will Hunting) as Jason Bourne before Tony Gilroy turned it into an unintelligent mess in The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner (The Avengers, The Hurt Locker, The Town) as all new spy Aaron Cross, will soon be continuing with its fifth instalment. The film was, however, pushed back till 2016 and its now rumoured that the delay was to accommodate for returning star Damon. While we’d love this to happen, its unlikely as the Oscar winner only expressed interest in reprising the role should he do it with Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips) directing. I’d bet that the film’ll go on without them.

It’s hard to make early predictions for the next years awards season as so very few of the Oscar contenders by been seen by any audience, although Before I Go To Sleep, Magic in the Moonlight, Foxcatcher, Fury, The Birdman, Big Eyes, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Gone Girl and Interstellar are proving popular options. We’ve got our eyes on The Avengers/Sherlock Holmes star Robert Downey Jr’s return to drama in the hotly tipped The Judge. With director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers, Clay Pigeons) and acting ensemble of Robert Duvall, Vincent D’Onofrio, Vera Farmiga and Billy Bob Thornton, it sees a successful lawyer returning to his hometown to find his father, the local judge, at the centre of a murderous conspiracy whist the two try to bond. Find the first trailer here.

It’s awesome to see that Marvel and Netflix’s new collaboration on comic book adaptation Daredevil is building up a truly awesome cast of film stars. Charlie Cox (Broadwalk Empire, Stardust) portrays the titular blind lawyer, inheriting the role from the disastrous Ben Affleck, while Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Jurassic World) will take on the villainous Kingpin. Showrunner Stephen S DeKnight has now cast Rosario Dawson (Seven Pounds, Trance, Sin City) in an unconfirmed role and suggestions from Marvel fans are stretching from Misty Knight to Karen Page to Elektra. We’ll be bringing you all the latest from Daredevil and the rest of The Defenders very soon.

2012’s genius time travel gangster thriller Looper currently ranks as our second favourite sci-fi film of the decade so far, only just beaten by Inception. Its director Rian Johnson (who also wrote and directed Brick, The Brothers Bloom and numerous episodes of Breaking Bad) has been heading for the big leagues for some time and he’s now landed his biggest gig of career yet. He’s officially been appointed to helm Star Wars: Episodes VIII and IX.

We couldn’t be more thrilled with the hiring. This follows the excellent appointments of JJ Abrams (Super 8, Star Trek Into Darkness), Josh Trank (The Fantastic Four, Chronicle) and Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) for Episode VII and the untitled spin offs. Abrams fans need not worry as he’ll still scribe the new trilogy just with the assistance of Johnson, Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back) and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3). The rebooted series will star Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Domnhall Gleeson, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Peter Mayhew, Gwendoline Christie, Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels, Oscar Isaac, Max Von Sydow, Lupita Nyong’o and Andy Serkis.

The Judge – October 24th

The Bourne Betrayal – July 15th 2016

X-Men: Apocalypse may go on without Singer, Pegg rumoured for Star Wars new Guardians posters and D’Onofrio is the Kingpin

For us, X-Men: Days of Future Past is the film of the year to beat but yet its director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie, X-Men 2) may not be returning for the film’s sequel due to legal problems. With now settlement made yet, widely held speculation states that the high profile allegations may rule Singer out X-Men: Apocalypse and so heads a turning towards potential replacements.

The obvious choice is Matthew Vaughn, the man who brought us Kick-Ass, Layer Cake, Stardust, Kingsman: The Secret Service and X-prequel First Class; Vaughn was set to work on the sequel which became DoFP but pulled out and this’d be his chance to properly develop the FC graduates. Others are baying for new blood however but no names of proved greatly popular other than Singer himself. Apocalypse will star Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Brendan Pedder, Channing Tatum and Hugh Jackman.

For a Hollywood film, there are an extraordinary amount of international actors in Star Wars: Episode VII from the Guatemalan Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) to the Mexican Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), the Irish Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) and the Swedish Max Von Sydow (Minority Report) as well as seven Brits (John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Gwendoline Christie and Andy Serkis) and just four Americans (Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford). Now rumoured to be joining the cast in a cameo role is British comedy legend Simon Pegg.

Seeing as he has no direct connection to the Star Wars franchise, this would seem a completely random claim until you consider Pegg’s history with Episode VII’s director JJ Abrams (Super 8, Lost). I think I’m right in saying that Pegg, also renowned for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End, The Adventures of Tintin and Paul, has worked with Abrams more than anyone else with supporting roles in Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness (where he played the reimagining of the Enterprise’s Scotty). Should Pegg actually be appearing in the sci-fi sequel, we’ll be wondering if the geek hero is onto a major role through the new trilogy or if this’ll just be a one off nod to his previous work.

Despite the horrifying attempt at cracking Matt Murdock just over ten years ago, Marvel are giving Daredevil a second try in the form of a 13 part Netflix series starring Charlie Cox (Broadwalk Empire, Stardust) as the blind lawyer turned vigilante but now Vincent D’Onofrio (Men in Black, Full Metal Jacket) has been confirmed to be playing the new Kingpin. Marvel fans will remember that Kingpin, or Wilson Fisk, was formally a villain of Spider-Man before he was adopted as the arch-nemesis of Daredevil’s comics. I’m not convinced that D’Onofrio has the right physique for Fisk but the appointment of a major film star is promising.

X-Men: Apocalypse – May 19th 2016

Johnny Depp could be the new Houdini and Charlie Cox is your Daredevil

Ben Affleck’s woeful action adventure Daredevil left a decade long scar on Marvel’s blind superhero. However Matt Murdock and the rest of The Defenders will hopefully be getting proper treatment with a new set of TV series from the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), the guys behind Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Agents of SHIELD and The Avengers. With Drew Goddard now departing to make The Sinister Six, Joss Whedon veteran Steven S DeKnight (producer/writer of Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse, Smallville and Spartacus: War of the Damned/Gods of the Arena) has taken of showrunning duties. It’s now been revealed that Charlie Cox has snagged the lead role.

Although the British star has a recurring role on Broadwalk Empire, he’s best known for his lead in Matthew Vaughn’s excellent throwback fantasy adventure Stardust. His casting is yet another traditionally American hero going to a Brit, no bad thing, following in the footsteps of Henry Cavill, Christian Bale and Andrew Garfield. From now, the castings should start rolling in.

Three time Oscar nominee Johnny Depp’s star has faded somewhat in recent years. Since experiencing huge success with Platoon, Donnie Brasco, Edward Scissorhands, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleepy Hollow, Public Enemies and the multi-billion Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, he’s had some relatively undergrossing efforts with Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger and (most recently) Transcendence. He’s still an immense talent however and so we’re hopeful that his next project brings more success.

He’s now reportedly in negotiations for the lead in The Secret Life of Houdini, a biopic of the legendary magician Harry Houdini. The screenplay, from The Maze Runner’s Noah Oppenheim, is based on a book claiming that Houdini leaved a double life as a live performer and as an undercover agent. Despite beginning talks, Depp’s a hugely busy man, working on Into the Woods (Jan 9th 2015), Mortdecai (Feb 6th 2015), Through the Looking Glass (May 27th 2016) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2016).

New director for Assassin’s Creed, Sam Mendes talks Bond return and Joe Quesada on Marvel’s Defenders

In loving memory of Bob Hoskins, 1942 – 2014

2012’s Skyfall was one of the most critically lauded films in the Bond series so far (with five Oscar nominations and eight BAFTA nods including Best Supporting Actor and Actress for Javier Bardem and Judi Dench as well as Best British Film, Editing and Cinematography), and it was easily the highest grossing with over a billion dollars in the bank. It was no surprise to hear that its director, Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road, Road to Perdition), was wanted to return for Bond 24 but he’s now revealed the reasons why. He claims that Skyfall left a “number of stories that were incomplete. I cast a new M, I cast a new Moneypenny, I cast a new Q. I felt there was a second part of a two-part story.”

Mendes also opened up the possibility of Bond 25, which star Daniel Craig is up for. “It helped when Eon agreed to wait a little longer and not go immeadiately – not go with two movies and instead go with one, which I felt very strongly about.” We’re expecting Daniel Craig (Munich), Ben Whishaw (Cloud Atlas), Rory Kinnear (Southcliffe), Naomi Harris (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) and Ralph Fiennes (Schindler’s List, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The English Patient, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) to reprise their roles while Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Serenity) and Penelope Cruz (Volver, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) have long been rumoured for a part.

There’s been a long haul to get video game sensation Assassin’s Creed into cinemas in a film-adaptation. For a while, Michael Fassbender (300, 12 Years a Slave, Shame, Prometheus, X-Men: First Class) has been nailed in for the lead role of Desmond Miles while Swedish writer Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Easy Money) was our favourite to become director. Now it seems that Fassbender has roped his buddy Justin Kurzel from his upcoming Bard adaptation Macbeth (also starring David Thewlis and Marion Cottilard) for the directing gig. Kurzel also brought us murderous drama Snowtown and is now in negotiations for the job.

Assassin’s Creed tells the story of Desmond Miles, an ordinary man captured by shady corporation Abstergo and forced to relive the memories of his ancestors. They, as Assassins, discovered secret artefacts and revelations about gods and aliens. This allows the players to cross numerous time zones, including renaissance Italy, revolutionary America and the swashbuckling Caribbean, and delve in the free-running knife-wielding antics.

Despite Agents of SHIELD’s on-off success, Marvel is confident enough to put forward a new set of shows. Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage will all receive their own Netflix 13 part series before the four combine to make The Defenders. Producer of numerous Marvel TV flicks Joe Quesada has told us all about how these 52+ episode saga is forming.

There’s the initial issue of continuity with the rest of the Marvel universe, Agents of SHIELD’s most admirable feature. “They will exist within the cinematic universe again, so this is all the same world as SHIELD and The Avengers. There will be some interconnectivity, much like the movies.  Although these are superhero stories, this is different,” he elaborate. “This is the street level, noir side of the Marvel universe, probably more ground level than you’ve really seen in any of our Marvel movies.”

“The scripts are coming in,” says Quesada, “and they’re pretty fantastic: very emotional, very original. But at the same time, it is Daredevil; it is Matt Murdock. These stories take place in Hell’s Kitchen, and the fantastic thing is that we’re shooting at home in New York where these characters belong. We will hopefully start casting really, really soon.” Sadly there’s no word on potential plotlines or if classic Daredevil villains such as Kingpin, Bullseye or the ever-unforgetable Stilt-Man will feature but, with the show(s) fastly developing, we can’t be too far away from those kind of confirmations.

RoboCop poster, Pattinson goes to Lost City of Z, Michael Fassbender’s Magneto costume revealed for X-Men 7 and Marvel plans more TV with Netflix

Crime has a new enemy in next year’s action reboot RoboCop. We’re starting this week with a bang and who better to do that than the Digital Detective himself. Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) stars in the title role with Samuel L Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Doug Urbanski, Jay Baruchel and Jennifer Ehle as well as director Jose Padilha.

Our next epic new image is of Michael Fassbender playing the young Magneto (Ian McKellen) in a brilliant new outfit. This is of coarse for Bryan Singer’s (The Usual Suspects, X-Men) superhero time travel sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.  It’s awesome stuff but you have to ask where’s the helmet?

The first of today’s full articles is casting rumours for the British Twilight, Harry Potter and Remember Me star Robert Pattinson. As well as being a teen idol for the aforementioned Twilight, he’s proved himself to critics with the recent David Cronenberg drama Cosmopolis. He could be on for the new action/adventure/biography in The Lost City of Z.

If so, he’ll be joining it’s star Benedict Cumberbatch as well as director/writer James Gray (We Own the Night) and Brad Pitt’s company Plan B. Z is the true story of explorer Percy Fawcett who left to the Amazon rainforest but never returned.

Finally, we’ve confirmation that Disney and Netflix will be teaming up for a whole load of live-action Marvel TV series after Joss Whedon’s gradual success with Agents of SHIELD. Agent Carter was one of the potential series that we’ve talked about on this blog but Marvel’s TV quartet have been revealed. It’s Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.

Here’s Empire’s guide to these heroes and who should play them!
