Summer box-office part 1 – Ant-Man, M:I-5, Ted 2, Terminator 5, Minions and more!

Its been a while since our last box-office update so in this instalment we’ll roundup the best of the summer so far. The pre-Summer cash-in period was dominated by the likes of superhero smash hit sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1396 million), Pixar’s acclaimed animation Inside Out ($556 million), fast follow up Furious 7 ($1512 million), musical comedy Pitch Perfect 2 ($282 million), disaster thriller San Andreas ($461 million), action reboot Mad Max: Fury Road ($367 million) and the multi-record breaking dinosaur mayhem of Jurassic World ($1547 million). Moving into July, here some major favourites.

Film: Ted 2

 Seth MacFarlane
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, Amanda Seyfried, Giovanni Ribisi, Patrick Stewart
Budget: $68 million
Opening weekend: $33.5 million
Box-office: $160 million
Summary: A very disappointing follow up to 2012’s Ted ($549 million). After the mediocre performance of MacFarlane’s western A Million Ways to Die in the West ($86 million), there’s increasing doubt in the Family Guy creator’s popularity.

Film: Terminator Genisys
Director:
 Alan Taylor
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, JK Simmons
Budget: $155 million
Opening weekend: $27 million
Box-office: $318 million
Summary: While it was a healthy opening but the franchise has long lost its previously stellar hype.

Film: Magic Mike XXL
Director:
Gregory Jacobs
Starring: Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Amber Heard, Jada Pinkett Smith
Budget: $14 million
Opening weekend: $12.9 million
Box-office: $102 million
Summary: The progressive stripper comedy sequel has decreased from Steven Soderbergh’s 2012 original ($167 million) and other raunchy blockbusters have been more profitable – for example Fifty Shades of Grey ($569 million) – but it’s still an impressive tally.

Film: Minions
Directors:
Pierre Coffin, Kyle Balda
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Pierre Coffin, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Geoffrey Rush
Budget: $74 million
Opening weekend: $115 million
Box-office: $854 million
Summary: This triumphant spin off managed to surpass and compete with the previous instalments of the beloved Despicable Me franchise.

Film: Ant-Man
Director: Peyton Reed
Starring: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Michael Pena, Michael Douglas
Budget: $130 million
Opening weekend: $57 million
Box-office: $291 million
Summary: It’s an underperformance in comparison to Marvel’s fellow Phase 2 superhero flicks such as Avengers Assemble ($1519 million), Iron Man 3 ($1215 million), Thor: The Dark World ($644 million), Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714 million), Guardians of the Galaxy ($774 million) and The Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1396 million) but is a worthy reception for the kings of summer blockbusters.

Film: Trainwreck
Director: Judd Apatow
Starring: Amy Schumer, Bill Hader, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn, Tilda Swinton
Budget: $35 million
Opening weekend: $30.1 million
Box-office: $80 million
Summary: A traditional fooled-around-and-fell-in-love rom-com might have sank but the presence of rising star Amy Schumer has elevated this to the likes of Apatow’s The 40 Year Old Virgin ($177 million) or Knocked Up ($219 million).

Film: Pixels
Director: Chris Columbus
Starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage
Budget: $88 million
Opening weekend: $24 million
Box-office: $102 million
Summary: This sci-fi adventure’s financial reception didn’t live up to the premise but a budget half the size of Tomorrowland’s means that it may actually breakeven at the box-office.

Film: Southpaw
Director: Antoine Fuqua
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Oona Laurence, Naomie Harris, Rachel McAdams
Budget: $25 million
Opening weekend: $16.7 million
Box-office: $34.2 million
Summary: This sport drama failed to rekindle the mass popularity of boxing flicks such as Rocky ($225 million).

Film: Paper Towns
Director: Jake Schreir
Starring: Nat Wolff, Cara Delevingne, Halston Sage, Jaz Sinclair, Austin Abrams
Budget: $12 million
Opening weekend: $12.7 million
Box-office: $49.5 million
Summary: A decent opening for the young adult romantic drama but well off the other John Green adaptation The Fault in Our Stars ($307 million).

Film: Vacation
Directors: Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley
Starring: Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann, Chris Hemsworth, Chevy Chase
Budget: $31 million
Opening weekend: $14.9 million
Box-office: $22 million
Summary: The comedy reboot of the adored Chevy Chase franchise didn’t inspire a great amount of nostalgia for fans of the originals.

Film: Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Starring: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin
Budget: $150 million
Opening weekend: $56 million
Box-office: $121 million
Summary: The Cruise action vehicle builds off the wobble of Edge of Tomorrow ($369 million). The spy series returned in style and will grow throughout the summer.

New images from Pan, Star Wars 7 trailer announced and Oscar Isaac is X-Men’s Apoclypse

In 2015’s plethora of blockbuster sequels (Avengers 2, Hunger Games 4, Fast and Furious 7, Terminator 5, Jurassic Park 4, Mission: Impossible 5, Ted 2, Star Wars 7, Minions), the reinvention of Peter Pan that’s to be released that year may well get washed away. It’s ramming in the marketing early with these new shots. Joe Wright (Atonement, Anna Karenina, Pride & Prejudice, Hanna) directs the cast of Hugh Jackman (The Prestige, X-Men), Rooney Mara (The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Amanda Seyfried (Les Miserables, Dear John), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Inside Llewyn Davis), Nonso Anozie (Ender’s Game, The Grey) and newcomer Levi Miller as Pan.

Guatemalan star Oscar Isaac is one of the decades’ biggest rising stars and yet is now getting the recognition of Hollywood royalty. Following supporting roles in Robin Hood and Drive, he’s blown big as the lead of Coens’ Inside Llewyn Davis as well as this year’s The Two Faces of January and A Most Violent Year before cropping up in the new Star Wars (more on that soon). His next major mainstream role will be as the central villain of the next X-Men film, Apocalypse. Idris Elba and Tom Hardy were rumoured to be in the running but Isaac, a Golden Globe nominee, has beaten them off.

Apocalypse is directed by Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, Days of Future Past, Valkyrie) while Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave, Prometheus), Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook), James McAvoy (Atonement, Trance), Evan Peters (Kick-Ass, American Horror Story), Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodies, A Single Man), Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher, 21 Jump Street) and Hugh Jackman (again).

Finally, we know when we’ll get on hands on the very first footage from 2015’s most anticipated release: Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. This Thanksgiving weekend, it’s reported that the teaser will be attached to most screenings in the holiday box office boost. JJ Abrams (Super 8, Star Trek Into Darkness) directs the returning cast of Harrison Ford (Blade Runner), Mark Hamill (Arkham), Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, Warwick Davis (Willow) and Carrie Fisher (When Harry Met Sally) with the new batch Domhnall Gleeson (About Time), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Max Von Sydow (Minority Report), Adam Driver (Lincoln), Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) and John Boyega (Attack the Block) with newcomer Daisy Ridley in a lead role and Andy Serkis (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings).

Tuorhoth returns with the latest on Hobbit 3, Justice League, Avengers 2, Star Trek 3, Spider-Man, Jungle Book and more!

We’re sad to say that we’ve been away on a week of huge movie news, which we’re now dubbing MEGA-NEWS. We’ve got the scoop on pretty much every major movie coming our way in the next couple of years, and beyond, besides an official casting for Star Wars: Episode VII but we’re not completely in the dark with Star Trek Into Darkness’ JJ Abrams’ sequel to the world’s biggest movie franchise.

There’s a huge amount of spin offs to Star Wars in various medias. TV shows like Clone Wars and (now) Rebels, video games such as Battlefront, Knights of the Old Republic and the hugely successful Force Unleashed saga and numerous comic books and graphic novels have revived the series through some difficult times. However, some the most renowned SW side stories are from the novels such as Timothy Zahn’s work (above) and Darth Plagueis. Some of these books are light fan-fiction but most of it is genuine, George Lucas-approved canon to the main films. Despite this, we now know that the storytelling works of Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) are not to take off from the novels.

Producer and writer Simon Kinberg informs us that “For the movies, the canon is the canon, and the canon is the six films that exist. It’s all about honouring the movies and telling a new story.” We still don’t know of a single cast member or title but that’s set to change as, all going well, filming finally begins this May. Star Wars: Episode VII – December 18th 2015

The life of technological visionary Steve Jobs has once, unsuccessfully, been told on screen with Ashton Kutcher in the lead role. Sony’s alternative to this has been in their minds for a long time and it seemed quite promising when it appeared that David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Seven, The Social Network) was to direct with Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, American Hustle, The Prestige) starring.

It’s now apparent that Sony are negotiating with Danny Boyle for the directing job. Boyle, the British writer and director behind Trainspotting, 127 Hours, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Trance, Shallow Grave and Slumdog Millionaire as well as the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, is the second highly esteemed director Sony have approached after Fincher but the most exciting reveal of all of this is that Boyle may be reuniting with his star of The Beach, and five time Oscar nominee, Leonardo Di Caprio (The Wolf of Wall Street, Titanic, Inception, Django Unchained, The Departed) for the film.

Ray Fisher has only one on-screen acting role so far, 2008 short film The Good The Bad and The Confused, and yet he’s swiftly becoming one of the most talked about young stars in Hollywood. He came into competition for the male lead in Star Wars, which he may be unlikely to get, but has just landed the biggest role in his career: he’s been cast as DC comics hero Cyborg in Zack Snyder’s (300, Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead) Man of Steel sequel Batman vs Superman. Despite that unconfirmed title, it seems as if this’ll much more of a Justice League themed adventure than we’d thought at the 2013 Comic-Con announcement. Fisher joins Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, Gal Gadot, Tao Okamoto and Laurence Fishburne in the cast. Batman vs Superman – May 6th 2016

Disney and Warner Bros are in a highly heated race to get a new remake of The Jungle Book to are screens. The latter found a great choice of director in Ron Howard (Rush, Apollo 13) before his replacement set up Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings/King Kong star and The Hobbit’s second unit director) for the job. Meanwhile Disney is far ahead; Elf and Iron Man’s Jon Favreau is nailed in to direct and we know that Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, The Wire, Luther, Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom) will voice Shere-Kahn but another two stars are part of a new rumour. 12 Years a Slave’s Oscar winning supporting star Lupita Nyong’o is up for the role of Rackcha, Mowgli’s adoptive wolf-mother, while Scarlett Johansson (four time Golden Globe nominee of The Avengers and Lost in Translation fame) could be putting an interesting spin on Kaa, the hypnotising and villainous snake whose charms put the heroes in peril. The Jungle Book – October 9th 2015

Celebrating their 300th issue and their 25th anniversary, Empire Magazine are giving some incredible coverage of upcoming films including Marvel’s sci-fi sequel The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Joss Whedon, writer of The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Serenity and Toy Story, had this to say about the various villains in the film. “I fiercely dislike the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that. But last time I had all of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict.”

The chief villain is obviously the robotic Ultron and he may be Whedon’s highlight “I’m having a blast with Ultron,” Whedon said. “He’s not a creature of logic – he’s a robot who’s genuinely disturbed. We’re finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.” Star Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man) recently shared the very first on-set pic from the film (above) that also stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson, Cobie Smulders, James Spader, Thomas Kretschmann, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Jeremy Renner, Hayley Atwell, Don Cheadle and Paul Bettany. The Avengers: Age of Ultron – May 1st 2015

Taking off from indie sci-fi hit Safety Not Guaranteed, writer/director Colin Trevorrow, who’s hinted at further instalments, takes on a huge role with the lead gig on dinosaur action reboot Jurassic World which has finally revealed some pics from their island photography. These sneak peeks offer a more futuristic style than we’d initially expected. The Jurassic Park sequel stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Nick Robinson, Omar Sy, Katie McGrath, BD Wong Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Judy Greer and Vincent D’Onofrio. Jurassic World – June 12th 2015.

Sadly, Star Trek and Fringe writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are going their seperate ways in order to focus on the bigger directing projects that have attracted them both. Kurtzman is the current candidate to direct Spider-Man spin-off Venom but Orci has expressed his desire to become the director of Star Trek 3.

Several directors, including Rupert Wyatt and Joe Cornish, had previously been rumoured after JJ Abrams opted out in favour of Star Wars. Should he get the job, it’d be the Mexican’s directorial debut while Kurtzman does have a shot-calling credit on indie drama People Like Us. Star Trek 3 – 2016

The Bourne Identity’s Doug Liman is the man behind the new Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible, Minority Report, Top Gun) sci-fi action Edge of Tomorrow. It sees a soldier forced to constantly relive a battle again and again until its success and unveiled a new poster today. With the impressive supporting cast of Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau, Looper), Bill Paxton (Aliens, Agents of SHIELD) and Lara Pulver (Da Vinci’s Demons, Sherlock), it could surprise us but it’s set to be another throwaway Cruise flick that treads too closely to other films (in Oblivion’s case Moon and in this case Source Code). Edge of Tomorrow – May 30th.

There have already been some intriguing castings for Joe Wright’s (Hanna, Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) reboot of Disney animation Peter Pan. Unknown star Levi Miller will play a younger version of the titular role while Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, Inside Llewyn Davis, Death Sentence) plays Pan’s adversary Hook, who currently serves under the flag of Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman – X-Men, Les Miserables, The Prestige). Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, Side Effects) will play American-Indian chief’s daughter Tiger Lily. Now an additional Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia, Les Miserables), Kathy Burke (Nil By Mouth, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and Nonso Anozie (Ender’s Game, The Grey) have officially joined the ensemble. Pan – July 17th 2015.

We were as thrilled as any when it was revealed that the five remaining members of Monty Python, the legendary British comedy sextet behind Life of Brian, The Flying Circus, The Meaning of Life and The Holy Grail, would be bravely running away onto the O2 stage for their final reunion but were as equally disappointed when the tickets sold out in an incredible 43 seconds. However, there may be a new way for the millions of fans missing out to enjoy the return of Mesrs Cleese, Jones, Gilliam, Idle and Palin. It’s been announced that 1500 screens (including 450 in the UK) across the globe will be presenting the show’s closing night as part of a worldwide live cinema event. Monty Python Live – June 20th.

One of the Spider-Man franchises biggest icons is one who is neither a superhero nor supervillain but Peter Parker’s chain-smoking, media-dictating Daily Bugle boss John Jonah Jameson Junior, portrayed excellently by JK Simmons in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy. However, he’s yet to appear in Marc Webb’s recent reiteration The Amazing Spider-Man. Webb, flanked by Amazing Spider-Man 2’s stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan, spoke out about the possibility of JJJ’s return for future films at a Google+ fan Q&A.

“I like the idea very much of him coming up in the next film. It was more easy to accept a new Spider-Man than someone who could outdo J.K. Simmons in that role. He is so iconic. That’s something we’ve really talked about. Obviously I love that character because he poses such an interesting dilemma for Spider-Man. The answer is I don’t know, but I think you can expect to see him in the future.” The Amazing Spider-Man 3 – June 10th 2016. The Amazing Spider-Man 4 – 2018.

The final part of Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy trilogy, and Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit is approaching fast but a report from TheOneRing hinted at a potential title change from There and Back Again to Into the Fire. Neither sounded quite as previous subtitles such as An Unexpected Journey or The Desolation of Smaug. It then took us by surprise to hear that the title as officially change to The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. The Oscar winning writer/director Jackson himself stepped out to say this.

“Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the “Desolation of Smaug”.

“When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.”

Without trying to give too much away for the Tolkien-illiterate, The Battle of the Five Armies is a defining moment in Middle-Earth history and so I think it get’s a well deserved place on the titles. It’s been hinted that There and Back Again hasn’t been completely ditched and will appear on the various boxsets for the films so The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will be the three films that make up our The Hobbit: There and Back Again trilogy.

Battle of the Five Armies will star Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Luke Evans, Evangeline Lilly, Ian McKellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Lee Pace, Manu Bennett, Ian Holm, Sylvester McCoy, Aidan Turner, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt, Billy Connolly, Graham McTavish, Hugo Weaving and Christopher Lee. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – December 12th

New Captain America 2 posters and Amanda Seyfried joins Ted 2

One of the hotly anticipated films of this year is the comedy western A Million Ways to Die in the West. Directed and written by and starring Ted and Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane, the film also features Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron, Neil Patrick Harris, Sarah Silverman, Giovanni Ribisi and Amanda Seyfried. Seyfried, star of Les Miserables, Mamma Mia and In Time, it seems will be teaming up with MacFarlane once more for the sequel to 2012’s smash hit comedy Ted. The Oscar nominated dark fantasy stormed to success with a decent critical release and $550 million worth of worldwide box office takings. Seyfried’s addition as the female lead for the sequel probably means that Mila Kunis (a MacFarlane veteran) may not be involved. The film will also star Mark Wahlberg and Jessica Barth.

Two awesome new posters have been unveiled ahead of the release of Marvel’s new thriller Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Anthony and Joe Russo direct the sequel with Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Dominic Cooper, Hayley Attwell, Toby Jones, Emily Van Camp and Michelle Yeoh but today’s release show two other characters that’ll make their debut in the new film. In the plot, which sees Captain America’s (Chris Evans) dead buddy Bucky reanimated and brainwashed with hatred and an assassin’s skills, Anthony Mackie (The Adjustment Bureau, The Hurt Locker) plays The Falcon, a SHIELD agent who assists Cap in bringing the sinister Winter Soldier down. Meanwhile, Robert Redford, two time Oscar winning star of Out of Africa, The Sting, All is Lost, All the President’s Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid as well as director of Quiz Show and Ordinary People, appears in a one sheet dedicated to his shady SHIELD head Alexander Pierce. By for now.

A Million Ways to Die in the West – May 30th

New Million Ways to Die in the West pic, Mike Newell linked to Triffids and Espinosa linked to Assassin’s Creed

Family Guy’s creator/Ted’s writer, director and star Seth MacFarlane once again directs, stars and writes for his new production, a comedy Western titled A Million Ways to Die in the West. With perhaps the exception of Blazing Saddles, the comedy Western genre has long been cliched and poorly received but MacFarlane’s talent, and all star cast, should make this a success. The film stars MacFarlane, Amanda Seyfried, Neil Patrick Harris, Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron, Sarah Silverman and Giovanni Ribisi and one of the very first stills of the film was released today.

The Triffids, and their Day, will have a place in the heart of many horror fans. The menacing, and carnivorous, plants have seen a few TV reworkings, some more acclaimed than others, since the 1962 original. Sam Raimi (director of Evil Dead, Spider-Man and Oz: The Great and Powerful) is one of the producers of a new Triffids who’ve now set their sights on an acclaimed, BAFTA winning director.

Mike Newell may not instantly ring a bell but he’s reached near cult status with Donnie Brasco and Four Weddings and a Funeral but proved he could deliver excellent box-office goods with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ($896 million worldwide) and Prince of Persia Sands of Time ($335 million).

Another huge directing appointment is also afoot. For a while, video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed has cemented its place in summer 2015 despite having no star, although Michael Fassbender has been rumoured for the lead of Desmond Miles for ages, and no director. However, the latter is set to change.

The man the studios are after is Daniel Espinosa, who directed action thrillers Safe House and Easy Money. Later this year, the Swedish Epsinosa opens his new spy drama Child 44, which star Joel Kinnaman, Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Jason Clarke, Vincent Cassel, Gary Oldman, Dev Patel and Paddy Considine.

I’m not sure if the time consuming post production stage  on his current project will defer him from accepting the job on Assassin’s Creed but, if Espinosa successfully launches the first film, he could be onto a multi-movie deal. There’s six games’ worth of material to adapt, with more instalments each year, so sequels are likely.

New poster for Oldboy plus new roles for Emma Watson and Jennifer Lawrence

Oldboy is Spike Lee’s English language remake of Chan-Wook Park’s award winning 2003 thriller (also ranked 85th on IMDB’s Top 250 films of all time) of the same name. Ten years on, Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men, The Goonies) is the headline star with Samuel L Jackson (Jurassic Park, Avenger Assemble), Elizabeth Olsen (Like Crazy, soon to be Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron), Hannah Simone (New Girl) and Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium) in support. His character, Joe, is the centre of a plot that sees him seeking vengeance on those who imprisoned him for 20 years without a cause, as well as seeking answers and going in search of the mysterious girl with a yellow umbrella. The new poster for the film was unveiled yesterday, as was some fairly gruesome footage of the movie at The 2013 New York Comic-Con.

Moving on, two of the most popular young actresses of the moment have picked up new roles in completely unrelated films. First off, it’s Emma Watson. Out of the central trio of young heroes in the Harry Potter series, Watson has possibly been the most critically successful since the series conclusion . She cropped up in My Week With Marilyn, had a celebrity cameo in This is the End, will star with Anthony Hopkins, Russell Crowe, Logan Lerman and Ray Winstone in Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic Noah and had lead roles in the indie dramas The Bling Ring The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She could now be reuniting with her Wallflower director Stephen Chbosky for While We’re Young, although it’s becoming apparent that Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Frances Ha) may be directing after all.

Adena Halpern’s novel 29 (which itself has a plot – the story of a grandmother who’s much more friendly with her 29 year old grandaughter than her 55 year old daughter and gets her wish of becoming the same age of her grandaughter again granted – similar to Zac Efron flick 17 Again – were an elderly man has his wish granted and is once again his young self at high-school) is the inspiration for this production. Amanda Seyfried (Les Miserables, Mama Mia), Naomi Watts (King-Kong, The Impossible) and Ben Stiller (Zoolander, Tropic Thunder) are already going to star. According to IMDB, Watson has just started filming While We’re Young and will make that her third film of 2014 (alongside Noah – March 28th – and Your Voice in My Head).

The other young star is one of The Hunger Games, X-Men: First Class, Winter’s Bone and Silver Linings Playbook fame: Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence. Katniss Everdeen, as we like to call her, was attached to star in The Glass Castle in April 2012, just after the release of The Hunger Games. Since then, there’s been a halt in development after her Oscar win and a tonne of other roles coming her way (including reprising the role of Mystique in X-Men: Days of Future Past, East of Eden, American Hustle, Dumb and Dumber To and The Hunger Games’ sequels). We can presume that she’s close to sealing her role in the film that now has Destin Crettin (whose new drama Short Term 12 is getting all kinds of acclaim at the moment) set to direct.
