Weekend box office – 17th to 23rd of May 2014 – can Spider-Man 2 catch Bad Neighbours?

The title race for this year’s comedy smash hit arguably began with The Other Woman a couple of weeks back but the first real contender is this week’s Bad Neighbours, a star studded comedy set to rip into the box office. Additionally, its release is kickstarting the summer movie season. Last week, we predicted it’d leap in ahead of The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s second week of release but let’s see how it got on.

US:

  1. Bad Neighbours – Director: Nicholas Stoller – $49 million
  2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb – $35.1 million
  3. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes – $9.6 million
  4. Heaven is for Real – Randall Wallace – $7.5 million
  5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Anthony and Joe Russo – $5.8 million

UK:

  1. Bad Neighbours – Nicholas Stoller – £8.4 million
  2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb – £1.3 million
  3. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes – £0.9 million
  4. Rio 2 – Carlos Saldanha – £0.6 million
  5. Pompeii – Paul WS Anderson – £0.5 million

It’s not too surprising to find Bad Neighbours topping both sides of the Atlantic but this is the first time in a while that the UK and US box office top 3 have been identical. Superhero adventure Spider-Man 2 is doing decent numbers but it may not be the ones that Sony hoped for, as it is The Winter Soldier will lead it at the end of the year. Revenge comedy The Other Woman meanwhile is still holding out but its unlikely to be remembered. Despite a critical thrashing, Heaven is for Real is still reeling in the predominantly Christian audience in America while, in the UK, historical epic Pompeii is getting increasingly unlikely to breach the $100 million mark, let alone it’s minimal target of $160 million. This week’s score of 6/10 takes my running total to 135/280.

US:

  1. Godzilla – Gareth Edwards
  2. Bad Neighbours – Nicholas Stoller
  3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb
  4. Million Dollar Arm – Craig Gillespie
  5. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes

UK:

  1. Godzilla – Gareth Edwards
  2. Bad Neighbours – Nicholas Stoller
  3. The Two Faces of January – Hossein Amini
  4. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb
  5. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes

Zac Efron, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne in Bad Neighbours, this week’s UK and US box office number one.

Weekend box-office – 10th to 16th of May 2014 – will Other Woman get revenge on Spider-Man 2?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is kicking off the summer movie season with its US release but early predictions saw it falling behind blockbusters Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past and Godzilla. Sony need their sequel to take off otherwise their planned franchise could be quickly forgotten.

US:

  1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Director: Marc Webb – $92 million
  2. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes – $14.2 million
  3. Heaven is for Real – Randall Wallace – $8.6 million
  4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Anthony and Joe Russo – $7.7 million
  5. Rio 2 – Carlos Saldanha – $7.6 million

UK:

  1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb – £2 million
  2. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes – £1.4 million
  3. Pompeii – Paul WS Anderson – £1.2 million
  4. Tarzan – Reinhard Klooss – £0.8 million
  5. Rio 2 – Carlos Saldanha – £0.5 million

Spider-Man 2 has done decent numbers but it’s still greatly disappointing. The new X-Men, ordinarily the timid cousin of Avengers and Spider-Man, has a predicted $125 million coming its way. Meanwhile The Other Woman has hardly capitalised on this position, sitting still in second place. While it has been impressive, the revenge comedy is likely to lose the title of this year’s big summer comedy to Bad Neighbours, A Million Ways to Die in the West or 22 Jump Street. Despite these surprises, this week I’ve scored a decent 4/10, taking my running total to 129/270.

US:

  1. Bad Neighbours – Nicholas Stoller
  2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb
  3. Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return – Will Finn, Dan St Pierre
  4. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes
  5. Heaven if For Real – Randall Wallace

UK:

  1. Bad Neighbours – Nicholas Stoller
  2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb
  3. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes
  4. Sabotage – David Ayer
  5. Pompeii – Paul WS Anderson

Andrew Garfield, Dane DeHaan and Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this week’s UK and US number one.

Weekend box-office – 3rd to 9th of May 2014 – can Marvel’s Spider-Man and Winter Soldier hold off The Other Woman?

This week, two of Marvel’s blockbusters are the targets of feminised revenge comedy The Other Woman. Last week, we boldly predicted that thriller Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which has been kicking around a good few weeks, would slip down a place in the US but the more recent Amazing Spider-Man 2 would hold off the competition in the UK. Meanwhile sci-fi commercial flop Transcendence is attempting to regain some success after its initial flop.

US:

  1. The Other Woman – Director: Nick Cassavetes – $24.8 million
  2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Anthony and Joe Russo – $16.2 million
  3. Heaven if For Real – Randall Wallace – $14.4 million
  4. Rio 2 – Carlos Saldanha – $13.9 million
  5. Brick Mansions – Camille Delamarre – $9.5 million

UK

  1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb – £3.4 million
  2. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes – £2.7 million
  3. Transcendence – Wally Pfister – £1.2 million
  4. Rio 2 – Carlos Saldanha – £0.9 million
  5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Anthony and Joe Russo – £0.6 million

The Other Woman has debuted modestly and it’ll likely surpass $100 million worldwide but these statistics are hardly breakout comedy of the summer stuff, that title will likely go to Bad Neighbours, Tammy or A Million Ways to Die in the West. Captain America meanwhile has just reached the $650 million mark, just beating Thor: The Dark World’s total. The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s takings have dropped however, despite retaining the number one spot. Having scored 7/10, I’ve taken my running total to 125/260.

US:

  1. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb
  2. The Other Woman – Nick Cassavetes
  3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier – Anthony and Joe Russo
  4. Walk of Shame – Steven Brill
  5. Heaven is for Real – Randall Wallace

UK:

  1. Bad Neighbours – Nicholas Stoller
  2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Marc Webb
  3. Pompeii – Paul WS Anderson
  4. Transcendence – Wally Pfister
  5. Rio 2 – Carlos Saldanha

Dane DeHaan and Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, this week’s UK number one.

Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz and Kate Upton in The Other Woman, this week’s US number one.

Weekend box-office – 27th of February to 5th March 2014 – will The Lego Movie build on its success

Can epic animation The Lego Movie keep up its winning ways? You’d think so but McG’s new star bloated action thriller 3 Days to Kill and Paul WS Anderson’s disaster epic Pompeii arrived to challenge the Danish bricks.

US:

  1. The Lego Movie – Director: Chris Miller, Phil Lord – $31.5 million
  2. 3 Days to Kill – McG – $12.3 million
  3. Pompeii – Paul WS Anderson – $10 million
  4. RoboCop – Jose Padhila – $9.4 million
  5. The Monuments Men – George Clooney – $8.1 million

UK:

  1. The Lego Movie – Phil Lord, Chris Miller – £6 million
  2. Mr Peabody and Sherman – Rob Minkoff – £1.7 million
  3. Tinkerbell and The Pirate Fairy – Peggy Holmes – £1.2 million
  4. The Monuments Men – George Clooney – £1.1 million
  5. RoboCop – Jose Padhila – £0.9 million

Lego continues its reign of terror on the box office meaning RoboCop, Pompeii and The Monuments Men continue disappointing box office runs. I scored a disappointing 3/10 from last week, taking my running total to 80/170, but hopefully I can improve with these predictions:

US:

  1. Non-Stop – Juanne Collet Serra
  2. Son of God – Christopher Spencer
  3. Pompeii – Paul WS Anderson
  4. The Lego Movie – Phil Lord, Chris Miller
  5. RoboCop – Jose Padhila

UK:

  1. Non-Stop – Juanne Collet Serra
  2. The Lego Movie – Phil Lord, Chris Miller
  3. Ride Along – Tim Story
  4. The Book Thief – Brian Percival
  5. Mr Peabody and Sherman – Rob Minkoff

Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt) in The Lego Movie, this week’s UK and US box-office number one.

Weekend box-office – 19th to 26th of February 2014 – will RoboCop buy Lego for a dollar?

The LEGO Movie’s success has been pretty astronomical, both commercially and critically. Uninanimous four and five star reviews added to last week’s $70 million US opening led to the confirmation of sequel, scheduled for 2017, and our review of the animation is coming soon but the true test of a film’s box office success is if it can stay on top in the weeks to come. Sadly, LEGO had some tough competition this week with the new releases of RoboCop, About Last Night, Endless Love and Winter’s Tale while it made its debut in the UK. Let’s find out how it did.

US:

  1. The LEGO Movie – Director: Phil Lord, Chris Miller – $49.8 million
  2. About Last Night – Steve Pink – $25.6 million
  3. RoboCop – Jose Padhila – $21.7 million
  4. The Monument’s Men – George Clooney – $15.5 million
  5. Endless Love – Shana Feste – $13.3 million

UK:

  1. The LEGO Movie – Phil Lord, Chris Miller – £8.1 million
  2. The Monument’s Men – George Clooney – £1.6 million
  3. RoboCop – Jose Padhila – £1.5 million
  4. Mr Peabody and Sherman – Rob Minkoff – £1.4 million
  5. The Wolf of Wall Street – Martin Scorsese – £1.1 million

My predictions from last week score me a vastly disappointing 1/10 taking my running total to 77/160. The LEGO Movie made a brilliant debut in the UK and held off tough competition across the Atlantic. About Last Night made a good entry while RoboCop made a remarkably poor opening. Valentine’s Day favourites Endless Love and Winter’s Tale opened at fifth and seventh respectively. The latter is terribly disappointing, making $8 million from a $60 million budget. Joining Lego and Monuments, new UK entries The Pirate Fairy and Cuban Fury debuted at sixth and seventh respectively.

US:

  1. Pompeii  – Paul WS Anderson
  2. The LEGO Movie – Phil Lord, Chris Miller
  3. About Last Night – Steve Pink
  4. RoboCop – Jose Padhila
  5. The Monument’s Men – George Clooney

UK:

  1. The LEGO Movie – Phil Lord, Chris Miller
  2. The Monument’s Men – George Clooney
  3. Stalingrad – Fyodor Bondarchuk
  4. RoboCop – Jose Padhila
  5. Only Lovers Left Alive – Jim Jarmusch

Bad Cop (Liam Neeson) and Lord Business (Will Ferrell) in The LEGO Movie, this week’s UK and US number one.

The Super-Bowl 2014 Trailers special: Transformers 4, Noah and more!

We’re not venturing into sports just yet but the American Football extravaganza known as Superbowl is a huge event for advertising. With well over 100 million Americans watching, companies have to pay the whopping sum of $8 million dollars just for a one minute advertising slot. Only the biggest of big budget, big star blockbusters can afford to make the cut so you may be quite surprised when I tell you that among the nine titanic efforts trailered last night is the new project from Darren Aronofsky!

But before we get to that, we have the matter of a movie I recently predicted to make over a billion dollars. I speak of the fourquel of a monster series – Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Director Michael Bay (Armaggedon, Pearl Harbour, Bad Boys) returns to the series after a quick, and unsuccessful, break to make Pain and Gain. The franchise hopes to continue it success with an new human cast with Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor, replacing the old guard of Shia LaBeaouf, Rosie Huntington-Whitley and Megan Fox. This time, the Autobots are at battle with the villainous Dinobots and the technology tycoon Harold Attinger (Kelsey Grammer), the former is revealed in the very first trailer. The film also stars Stanley Tucci and Peter Cullen. July 10th.

The second instalment in this nine-part epic is Marvel’s very own Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We’ve seen footage from this before but Superbowl unveiled the second trailer, which offers more in depth look at new antagonist The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). The plot pitches Captain America (Chris Evans) still adjusting to life in the 21st Century as well as working with SHIELD Agents such as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Crossbones (Frank Grillo) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to bring down a new menace who’s terrorising Washington. Cap 2 also stars Emily VanCamp, Samuel L Jackson, Robert Redford, Cobie Smulders, Dominic Cooper, Hayley Attwell and Toby Jones and is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. March 28th.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is next. Marc Webb returns to direct the sequel which increases the stakes for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) who has to balance life between his superhero alter ego Spider-Man, who’s battling Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and the sinister father/son double act of Oscorp (Dane DeHaan as Harry and Chris Cooper as Norman), and normal life with the grieving Gwen (Emma Stone) and lonely Aunt May (Sally Field). The new trailer can be found here. To be honest, I’m not that impressed. April 18th.

Following on from their “Across the Internet” campaign, Muppets Most Wanted has launched a new ad in which the new doppelganging villain Clementine literally reaches out to us Across the Internet. Tina Fey, Ty Burrell, Stanley Tucci, Ricky Gervais, Lady Gaga, Tom Hiddleston, Salma Hayek, Christoph Waltz and Danny Trejo make up the human cast alongside the classic Muppets such as Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Sam the Eagle, Beaker, Dr Honeydrew, Walter and Animal. Flight of the Conchords/The Muppets’ James Bobin directs. March 28th.

With a premise of no CG, just expensive cars going ridiculously fast, video game adaptation Need for Speed is actually in good shape. It sees newly released ex-con Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul – Breaking Bad’s Jesse Pinkman) getting back into the dragraces that got him locked up for a year. Upon hearing the news, Marshall’s ex racing partner Dino (Dominic Cooper – Marvel’s Howard Stark) puts a bounty on his head. Scott Waugh (Act of Valour) directs a huge cast including Michael Keeton, Dakota Johnson, Scott Mescudi and Imogen Poots. The superbowl spot can be found hereMarch 12th.

We return to the aforementioned Darren Aronofsky who, after impressing with the likes of Black Swan, The Wrestler, Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, makes his comeback with a huge budget and cast list for his new epic picture Noah. The new trailer is available but I’m shocked that a director as prestigious as Aronofsky would fall to the depths of a Twitter hashtag; this time it’s “#TheFloodIsComing”!. The film stars Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkins, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone, Kevin Durand, Douglas Booth, Nick Nolte and Frank Langella. April 4th.

Pompeii seems to me like one of the potential box office clunkers of the year with a decent cast list which doesn’t match its huge budget but director Paul WS Anderson (Event Horizon, Resident Evil) may prove me wrong. The new trailer unveils a fair bit of spectacle so the film won’t rely on the cast of Kit Harrington, Carrie Anne Moss, Emily Browning, Jessica Lucas, Kiefer Sutherland, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jared Harris and Jessica Lucas alone. May 2nd.

3 Days to Kill launched a new trailer too. McG (This Means War, Terminator: Salvation, We Are Marshall, Charlie’s Angles) directs this new action thriller starring Kevin Costner as an dying agent who teams up with his daughter for one last assignment which get him the life saving drug he needs. Also starring Amber Heard, Connie Nielson and Hailee Steinfeld. February 21st.

Lastly, we have another Kevin Costner project. Draft Day sees the manger of American Football’s Cleveland Browns who’s struggling to find the number one draft pick for his team. Costner will star alongside Terry Crews, Jennifer Garner and Ellen Burstyn while director Ivan Reitman (Ghost Busters, No Strings Attached). April 11th

Ben Affleck talks more on Batman vs. Superman, Fifth Bourne moves into 2015 and new pics from Paul WS Anderson’s Pompeii

Directors Doug Liman and Paul Greengrass plus star Matt Damon are the trio who made The Bourne trilogy the success it was. After they left, Tony Gilroy squandered the opportunity for a decent prequel series with The Bourne Legacy despite the talented castlist, including Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton, in 2012. We previously heard that Justin Lin of the Fast and Furious franchise was linked and that Jeremy Renner would still be playing the guy who isn’t either Jason Bourne or Matt Damon. The production seems to have opted to chance it with the mammoths of movies in 2015, I.E Avengers 2, Ant-Man, Cinderella, Jurassic World, Batman vs. Superman, The Fantastic Four, Assassin’s Creed Mission Impossible 5, Kung-Fu Panda 3, The Good Dinosaur, Hunger Games 4, Inside Out and of coarse Star Wars: Episode VII who all managed to chase Pirates 6, Finding Nemo, Star Trek 3 and, more recently, (World of) Warcraft into 2016. August 14th is the more specific release date which means it’s not too far off Assassin’s Creed.

To finish off, we’ve got a couple of new pics from director Paul WS Anderson’s new disaster epic Pompeii starring Game of Thrones’ Kit Harrington, Emily Browning, Jared Harris and Kiefer Sutherland as well some more from Ben Affleck. They arrived courtesy of USA Today. Click next to cycle through the three pics.

We conclude with Ben Affleck’s latest word on 2015’s second biggest superhero release. Batman vs. Superman isn’t the official title but Zack Snyder’s sequel. “What I’ll say is that I really like Zack. From what I’ve seen of what’s Zack is doing, it’s made me very excited. One of the nice things about being an actor in that movie is they show you all the stuff before anyone else gets to see it. So all the sort of world-creation, and the take on the character and the other characters is really exciting.

And at the end of the day, the truth is it’s really directors that make movies work or not – especially these kinds of movies, where it’s about the whole world, and a rising tide lifts all ships. And if it all has integrity, if it all has a sense of realism, then it works. And if it doesn’t, than it doesn’t really matter what everyone’s doing on the screen because they just look like a bunch of Mexican wrestlers in suits.” Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane also make up the cast.

Pompeii – February 21st 2014

The Bourne Betrayal – August 14th 2015

Batman vs. Superman – July 17th 2015
