Tolkien biopic and Spider-Man spin-offs planned and Hammer revives The Abominable Snowman

Toady, we’ve got a trio of potentially excellent new pictures but some will likely be more mainstream than others.

The brilliant Peter Cushing starred in the classic 1957 horror adventure The Abominable Snowman. It could be up for a reboot which Empire describes:

“The new film will find a scientific expedition going off the beaten track and illegally making an ascent up one of the world’s most dangerous mountains. They soon discover why the area is off limits when they reawaken an ancient creature that promises to terrorise them all.” Matthew Read and Jon Croker will be writing the screenplay.

The next is a biopic of the legendary fantasy novelist JRR (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien). He was already an astonishing success but Peter Jackson’s film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit turned Tolkien into a cult phenomenon. The author was Oxford raised and was a member of a writer’s club with CS Lewis. The Hobbit was a huge hit and the studios’ demand for a sequel led Tolkien into a huge period of unrest and indecision. The book took twelve years to complete and the latter third was mostly inspired by the author’s experience in the Second World War.

Fox Searchlight will be producing this one. This story is of huge importance so I hope they get every detail, especially casting, bang on. Peter Jackson’s involvement would be both amazing and unlikely.

The most mainstream of these is the talk of a spin off to The Amazing Spiderman. “We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man,” said Son’y Michael Lynton a statement published by Deadline. “There are a number of scripts in the works.” Besides the incredible potential of The Aunt May Adventures, a villain story seems to be the go to Spidey spin-off. In many ways, Spidey is the Batman of the Marvel Universe: he has a much richer and varying source of enemies with Green Goblin, Sandman, Venom, Vulture, Dr Octopus, Electro, Rhino and many others among his list of antagonists.

We still don’t know if The Amazing Spiderman’s director, Marc Webb, and star, Andrew Garfield, are related to the production. I would think that 2017 is likely the earliest would could see this as Sony wouldn’t want any spin-offs challenging the many releases of 2015 or crossing paths with the main action of The Amazing Spiderman 3 in 2016. The next we can catch Spidey himself of the big screen is in 2014.
