Weekend box-office – 24th to 30th of January 2014 – will American Sniper gun down Paddington?

Bradley Cooper’s voice role as the loveable rogue rodent Rocket in Guardians of the Galaxy made him one of the team behind the summer’s biggest box-office smash hit. However the period drama Serena, co-starring Jennifer Lawrence, tanked a couple of months back which proved that the American Hustle/Hangover star’s financial success is never confirmed. His new collaboration with Unforgiven’s director Clint Eastwood, American Sniper, may capitalise on the film’s incredible Oscar success (including Best Picture and Actor) in the US but the UK has never gone wild for military flicks such as Lone Survivor so it may lose out to last week’s action sequel Taken 3. You can find last week’s predictions here.

US:

  1. American Sniper – Director: Clint Eastwood – $89.3 million
  2. The Wedding Ringer – Jeremy Garelick – $20.6 million
  3. Paddington – Paul King – $19 million
  4. Taken 3 – Oliver Megaton – $14.7 million
  5. Selma – Ava DuVernay – $8.8 million

UK:

  1. Taken 3 – Oliver Megaton – £3.3 million
  2. American Sniper – Clint Eastwod – £2.5 million
  3. The Theory of Everything – James Marsh – £2.3 million
  4. Into the Woods – Rob Marshall – £2 million
  5. Paddington – Paul King – £0.9 million

American Sniper’s victory doesn’t come as a surprise but, considering Ride Along’s three-week run atop in the US, Kevin Hart (and co-stars Josh Gad and Kaley Cuoco Sweeting) may well be disappointed with this opening. British adventure comedy Paddington overcame the fears of the little known source material underperforming with a decent entry. The week’s biggest loser is Michael Mann/Chris Hemsworth’s cyber thriller Blackhat which crashed with a measly $4 million. Liam Neeson’s Taken 3 retains its UK stop spot while I’ve scored 4/10.
