James Cameron tells more on Avatar sequels and Netflix grab Breaking Bad follow up Better Call Saul

TV phenomenon Breaking Bad’s creator Vince Gilligan and supporting star Bob Odenkirk are both set to create Better Call Saul, a comedic crime drama centred around a character from the most talked about show I can think of. While US cable AMC will broadcast the spin off in America, as it did with Breaking Bad, Netflix has once again bagged the rights so the rest of the world can find the new show online.

You’ll all know that Avatar is the greatest grossing film of all time taking close to three billion dollars worldwide. Its much hyped sequel won’t arrive until 2016, a full seven years since the original, but director James Cameron has talked more on some of the story he’s building in Avatar 2 and its following two instalments.

“At first I thought I was going to take it onto other worlds as well, in the same solar system, but it turned out not to be necessary,” the man behind Terminator, Titanic, True Lies and Aliens told the Associated Press. “I mean, the Pandora that we have imagined will be a fantasyland that is going to occupy people for decades to come, the way I see it.”

On the subject of the rumours of a deep-sea set plot, Cameron also said “There’s a fair bit of underwater stuff. It’s been inaccurately said that the second film takes place underwater. That’s not true. There are underwater scenes and surface-water scenes having to do with indigenous ocean cultures that are distributed across the three films.”

“It’s really the story of Jake Sully’s family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like The Godfather.” That’s certainly a bold statement but I don’t think it’ll take much time for the press to announce that Cameron is calling Avatar the new Godfather.

Today’s post isn’t too detailed but come by our site tomorrow for full, detailed analysis on the new trailer for Matt Reeves’ (Cloverfield) epic prequel to the classic Planet of the Apes and sequel to the brilliant Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Rowling’s Harry Potter spin-off film, Star Wars to shoot in LA and Breaking Bad spin-off possible

Breaking Bad’s fifth and final season is currently on, with only three episodes remaining. The smash hit is now set to have a spin-off series called Better Call Saul.

It’s centred around Bob Odenkirk’s character, a dodgy lawyer called Saul Goodman who was introduced in series 2. Breaking Bad’s creator Vince Gilligan talked to Empire about the spin-off. “You never assume lightning is going to strike twice. Having said that, I think a Saul Goodman show would be a great deal of fun, and a great challenge, and something I would look forward to doing.”

“It’s definitely not set in stone yet, it’s definitely the early days of the process, and it may happen or it may not. I personally would like to see it happen, because I think it would be its own creation and its own creature, and I think it would exist in a Breaking Bad universe, as it centres on a character that was integral to Breaking Bad, but I think it’s its own thing.”

Previous spin-off’s of great shows that seamed sure hits haven’t come off (e.g Matt LeBlanc’s Joey in an unsuccessful attempt and continuing Friends) but the fact that Breaking Bad’s creator Vince Gilligan and Saul’s creator Peter Gould are on board should get it off the ground and into Breaking Bad marathons of it’s worldwide fans.

A few months ago, it was confirmed that Star Wars Episode VII was to shoot in the UK, to much surprise, but now it’s official that not 100% of it will be in Britain. Thanks to Bad Robot’s office extension, part of the film will shoot in Los Angeles. LA has a lot of the big budget blockbuster facilities so this isn’t a huge surprise and JJ Abrams doesn’t want all the shoot to uproot his family.

The biggest piece of the news of today, and probably this week, is that Harry Potter may return. Not the boy wizard himself but a story based on one of JK Rowling’s successful spin-off books. In 2001 there was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and and Quidditch Through the Ages which was followed up seven years later by The Tales of Beadle the Bard. It’s Fantastic Beasts that will be adapted.

Post-Potter, Rowling has had a decent stab at other genre’s. The Casual Vacancy sold brilliantly but didn’t blow away the critics but you’ll probably have heard the story behind her next crime story. As an experiment, she went under the pen name of Robert Galbraith for The Cuckoo’s Calling which set critics alight. As soon as the secret that Rowling was behind it, it quickly became one of this year’s best selling books.

Fantastic Beasts is textbook styled guide to the monsters throughout Harry Potter’s world is written under the pen name of Newt Scamander. Ron and Harry’s hilarious editing of some of the book’s entry’s are the highlight. This will most likely bring in as much as possible from the HP Universe in order to bring in a actual narrative instead of the encyclopaedia styled book. No major characters or stars from the Harry Potter films are likely to star but we do know that JK Rowling will be writing a script. She, above anyone else, knows what stories are lurking outside of Hogwarts but there are some entertaining ones in The Tales of Beadle the Bard that could certainly add some amount of a storyline. In a statement she said:

“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning Fantastic Beasts into a film,” Rowling explained in a statement. “I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of Fantastic Beasts, realised by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hardcore Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood.”

“As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years, Fantastic Beasts is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”

So, will it be about the creation of the book? Will we meet a young Dumbledore in the days leading up to his legendary duel with Grindelwald? Does the shifting of setting from Highland Scotland to New York mean that Warner Bros have finally got they’re way and Americanised the franchise (remembering that originally they wanted a US setting with The Sixth Sense’s Haley Joel Osment as Potter until Rowling stepped in)? Wasn’t Luna meant to end up with Neville? Please comment what you think will happen in Fantastic Beasts and surely we’ll be finding out more at Pottermore!
