Avatar 4, Inbetweeners 2 and Sam L Jackson in Secret Service

We finally have new details on the continuation of James Cameron’s Avatar. Avatar 4 is now confirmed as well as Cameron appointing a new screenwriter. It’s War of the Worlds and The Black Dahlia writer Josh Friedman who also produced and wrote hit show Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Three Avatar films will be filmed simultaneously (Lord of the Rings style) with shooting beginning next year. The first of which, Avatar 2, will be released in 2016 with 3 in 2017 and the finale in 2018. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the pair responsible for writing Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the upcoming Jurassic Park IV, have been hired to scribe the 2nd film with Shane Salerno (Savages) writing the 3rd before Friedman’s 4th instalment.

“Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that Avatar’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen,” says Cameron.

Another sequel has been confirmed and it is a 2nd spin-off of the Channel 4 smash hit comedy The Inbetweeners. The first film made an excellent $88 million. It’s no where near blockbuster status but a comedy based on a TV show with very little fanbases outside of the UK was unlikely to make as much as it did. A sequel has been greenlighted and creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris made a statement.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be making another Inbetweeners movie with Simon, Joe, James and Blake. Frankly, it’s pathetic how much we’ve all missed each other. A new chapter in the lives of the Inbetweeners feels like the very least we can do to thank the fans for their phenomenal response to the first movie.”

The first film saw the leading four on a foreign Island holiday. Perhaps a roadtrip before a third film sees a wedding for at least one character.

Samuel L Jackson has now signed on for a role The Secret Service. The new comic-book adaptation comes form Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) and long time collaborator Jane Goldman. The Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Avengers Assemble and Pulp Fiction will play a villainous role that Tom Cruise and Leonardo Di Caprio were rumoured to take.

Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) is the leading star as a secret agent who welcomes his nephew (newcomer Taron Egerton) into the family business. After they become partners, they investigate the kidnapping’s of various action and science fiction legends including, in the comic, Mark Hamill. We’re still not sure if Vaughn will convince Hamill (best known as the portrayer of Star Wars’ Luke Skywalker) to join the project. It’s already rumoured that the film’s female lead will be Emma Watson.
